She did it all, including her own pie crusts. The food was delicious and widely praised, so naturally I wanted to learn her secrets. By the time I was 12 I baked chocolate chip cookies every weekend for the deli downstairs from Jerry�s office. I loved hearing from Norm and Elaine how many customers commented on my yummy cookies!#2 - picking colors - I�m not sure where I learned this, but I seriously can pick the right shade of a color when I�m out shopping with nothing to match it to... just from memory. I don�t really need to bring swatches, I just know which one is the right one. It comes in handy since I often find myself unprepared with fabric samples or paint chips when I�m out and about on a mission to find something for the house. Plus, I love this skill as I�m searching through my stash for the right scrapbooking product too.#3 - talking to people from all backgrounds - Maybe it�s because of working as a nurse for so long, maybe because I have so many sides to my personality, or maybe because I enjoy people, but somehow I can find something to talk about with anybody. I�m grateful for the gift of gab and ability to see things from another�s perspective! I know my job would be a lot harder without this to fall back on!

It seemed like the perfect time. We decided to try about 6 months before I was finishing graduate school. That way I would finish both school and my boards before a baby came along. I would be able to take the natural break to find the perfect job. Things didn�t go as we planned. It took 3 years to get pregnant, including an exploratory surgery and fertility treatments. During this time we had most of our friends have their first born, and some had their second also. Friends felt so bad for us that they worried about telling us their exciting news, which felt as bad as the sting of another month without success. The top photo here is early into our journey - only about 6 months of trying. We are holding our God son Zachary and could not be more excited for our friends. The bottom photo here is from a birthday lunch for my dear friend Shelley - with the nursing school group that always celebrated our birthdays together and still do. Both Shelley and Terry had newborns, and I recall feeling a little sorry for myself that day. I was in the midst of what would be my last treatment - I had visited the doctor�s office earlier that morning and little did I know then I conceived. The fertility roller-coaster was an excruciating trap that I was relieved to escape, but along the way I learned a valuable lesson of patience and faith. I surrendered to whatever was meant to be. We added our name to adoption lists and accepted we would be parents someday, somehow. I was used to setting goals and accomplishing them. I did not understand being unable to control the outcome in any way. I believe now that this experience was meant to be - to teach me a lesson and grow. It brought Brian and me even closer and afterward I knew we could survive anything.
