The Great Theater The Great Theater in Ephesus was constructed in the 3rd Century BC by the Greeks. It can seat up to 25,000 people. It’s located on the slope of Panayir Hill and is close to the southern entrance to Ephesus. During it’s hayday, the Great Theater was used for concerts, plays, political and religious discussions as well as gladiator and animal fights. The riot around Paul’s religious doings also took place in this theater (Acts 19). In modern times it has hosted such persons as Sir Elton John and the Pope. The road leading from the amphitheater is known as the Harbor Road. It used to lead directly to the harbor (the ocean is now about 10 miles further away than it was then). Anthony and Cleopatra were known to have walked this road. The view from the amphitheater is absolutely stunning. From the beautiful mountains lined with cypress trees, to the partially restored columns lining the Harbor Road. There was no surprise that the view also included soldiers, usually armed with Uzis, ensuring no one ventured where they shouldn’t or take just a small souvenier. This was the end of our tour through Ephesus. There was a short play where they presented something about what life was back then. There was a king, dancers, gladiators, and trumpeters. A short sword fight by the gladiators and a dance from the beautiful ladies finished the skit.
