The journaling reads:
We had gone to Washington, D.C. to meet up with the **Name Witheld** on their vacation. While we were in D.C. we had visited a few places such as the washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and Vietnam Wall. Mama wanted to make sure we saw the real wall as we had just seen the traveling wall a couple of weeks prior. While looking for the a family friend, Madalyn asked why all the names were written on the wall. After a few minutes, Mama told her that there was a war and many men and women were killed. To honor those men and women a wall was built so that they would never be forgotten. It was then that Grumpy spoke up and said, "Madalyn, had I not broken my arm and been given a new assignment, my name would probably be written on this wall. Your mama, you and Baleigh would not be here had God not have protected me and keep me from harms way" Madalyn was in shock, because it was then that the Vietnam Wall and what it meant became real to her. She took a step back against the wall, sighed and told Grumpy that she was glad he was with her.
