Thomas’ response to that question is one that I will never forget. “Well, obviously I think you sit it down and go... Your name is Thomas. You will respond to Thomas.” I wish desperately that I could accurately portray the tone of voice in which he said this, because it was a hundred times funnier in person than in writing. For some reason, children and our childhoods have been the topic of quite a few of our conversations lately. As evidenced by his response above, Thomas is not exactly the best with children. Which is why he told me that he thinks he will probably end up seeing my children once every three years or so. Here is his reasoning. He’ll see my children and tell them something outrageous or do something outrageous, which will make me say, “Nope! Not making that mistake again!” At which point I will refuse to let him see my children. Until three years later, at which point I will have forgotten what happened and will say, “Huh. I wonder why Thomas isn’t allowed to see my children. He really can’t be /that/ bad, can he?” And the cycle will repeat itself! To be honest, I don’t think Thomas will be nearly as bad as he jokes. For all that I say he will be a terrible father and isn’t allowed to have children unless he has a wife who can balance him out. Thomas is one of the sweetest boys I know. And I also know that he will be one of the best fathers when the time comes. There is no doubt in my mind that his methods will be unconventional and will have me laughing in horror at some points. But there is also no doubt in my mind that while his children will likely be somewhat quirky, they will also be brilliant and plain amazing, just like he is.
