Filling: 2 c scalded milk 1/2 c sugar 3 egg yolks - slightly beaten and mixed with sugar 1 packet gelatin (Knox - 1 Tbsp) 1/4 c cold water 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup whipping cream - whipped Dissolve gelatin in water. Scald milk in a medium saucepan. Add a little of the scalded milk to sugar and egg yolks mixture. Incorporate mixture with the remaining milk in the saucepan. Cook mixture over low heat until a spoon dipped in is coated (about 10 minutes). Stir in gelatin. Add vanilla. Remove from stove and cool until it begins to set. Fold in whipped cream. Refrigerate 30 minutes. Remove cake from pan carefully. Cut off top 1/3 of cake. Scoop out a ring in the middle 1/3 of cake - carefully keeping a rim to hold the custard within the cake. Fill with prepared custard filling and replace top of cake. Pour remaining custard over cake frosting cake. Decorate center and top with strawberries. |
