Now that we have kids, it feels more important that they know about our country’s history, and about the people who fought for our country and lost their lives. We walked up to the local parade and ceremony, and got our poppies to pin on our tops. It was quite emotional, seeing the members of the RSA marching, with such pride, and all the patriotic pride and memories. The atmosphere was really special. I had baked ANZAC biscuits which are traditional to have on ANZAC day, and we ate them as we listened to the speeches. They lowered the NZ flag, and we had a moment of rememberance, and sung the national anthem, and then a lone piper played ‘The Last Post’ - a very emotional and special moment. We will definitely be joining in the commemorations every year. and the quote is always said at the commemorations: “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.” More about ANZAC day here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZAC_Day |
