Journaling reads: Monique is the name I go by, randomly chosen by my parents, just because they liked it! In the sixties, French names had become very fashionable. Not only did I once share a classroom with two other Monique’s, names like Angelique, Jacqueline, Simone and the likes popped up very frequently. The meaning of the name, the advisor, was only later discovered by my parents, but I think it fits me very well! What I like about my name is that it’s rarely shortened. It’s also fun to hear different pronunciations of the name in different places. While travelling to Mediterranean countries, it’s changed into Monica, which I think sounds very cheerful! I know my grandmother didn’t like these modern names much, and not once pronounced my name correctly. My second name, Susanna, has been part of my maternal family for ages. Dating as far back as 1850, women in the De Rooi family were named Henrietta Susanna Paulina. While my mother still sports all three, I guess she thought one was enough for me to keep the tradition going. As neither my brother and I have had children of our own, this is sadly where the tradition ends….. TFL, Monique |
