I had reached the state where you’re not quite sure if you’re awake or asleep, and I thought I heard someone yell, “There’s a fire!” It woke me up, and I thought, “Please don’t let that be real. It was just someone yelling out on the street. No need to worry.” I laid my head back down, then heard the pounding on the door. “There’s a fire! Get out! There’s a fire!” I woke Alec up, “There’s a fire. You get the hard drive, I’ll get Ethan.” This was the plan we had previously talked about if anything like this ever hap- pened. We also rounded up the cats, and grabbed our Permanent Records file - birth certificates, social secur- ity cards, etc. - and were out the door less than 5 minutes later.. It turns out it was the balcony of the second floor apartment on the other side of the build- ing. Luckily, it was caught early and the fire department - all 3 trucks of them - were able to put it out before any major damage or injuries were sustained. We were back in our apartment by 3:15 and in bed by 4:00. How blessed we feel to have been watched over like that, and how fortunate that we had developed a plan of action ahead of time! |
