Journaling:
All of the 3rd grade classes attended the field trip to Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama where they make the Sonata and Santa Fe automobiles. Once we all arrived at the facility in Hope Hull, our entire group was photographed and then our presentation began. The kids were shown several maps that gave them a good understanding about the location of various operations and they were also shown several slides that detailed the facility.
Then it was time to begin our tour! We went out and loaded onto the trams with our headsets and glasses and headed off to the stamping shop where they use large rolls of sheet metal and steel to fabricate various parts of the autos. From there we went to the welding shop where many of the parts are pieced together. We passed the paint shop but were not allowed to enter due to their "clean air" requirements and then headed to the general assembly facility. This was where many of the general parts were placed onto the automobiles by both individuals and robots and was amazing. It is shaped like an F for truck deliveries which come throughout the day due to their just in time system - they never have more than 4 hours of parts on hand at any given time! After general assembly, we headed back outside and passed the test track area and went over to the engine shop where they actually build their own engines! This was the most amazing facility and tour! I think the parents probably enjoyed it more than the kids!

What a great and informative LO. I really wish I could have gone on the field trip too. Very nice matting too.

Great LO Kelli and what a fun field trip! I love the clips on the side of the LO and the fun splats of paint.
