fonts - Traveling Typewriter, 1942 Report, Artistamp Medium Journaling reads: It sounds like one of those hardship stories you hear from your elders, “I had to walk to school five miles through the snow, uphill both ways...” But in reality, that’s what it felt like! The last leg of our journey took us more than 14 hours. We drove 625 miles in a U-haul towing our Jeep, in the middle of winter through Yukon and Alaska, up and down mountain passes, on icy and snowy conditions - all without studs or chains. Oh yeah - and no CD player or radio reception! But Jason was determined to make it home in time for Thanksgiving dinner! Stopping along the roads was potentially dangerous because of the ice and snowdrifts. Aside from the border crossing, we limited our stops to gassing up in Destruction Bay, Tok, and Eagle River. In fact, we nearly didn’t make it up one uphill climb in the Matanuska Valley. It was stressful, but occasionally I would hear Jason murmur the name of a dish or two at dinner; “turkey, Mom’s rolls, pirok, dump salad, akutaq,” which seemed to energize him again for a short bit. We did finally make it into town. We were late for dinner, but there was still plenty of food left for us. And we were incredibly happy to finally be home with family once again. |
