Journaling Reads: It started out as a way to entertain the kids and get them out of everyone’s hair for a bit. I told them we were going on a treasure hunt. I had no plan, I was totally winging it! We started to walk around camp and when we came across a stick, I’d call them all to gather around the look at the “dinosaur bone”! They all wanted to collect and keep their treasures, so we found plastic grocery bags for them to stash their goods. I quickly realized the kids would pick up anything I pointed out to them so pre-tty soon the game turned into a fun way to pick up trash and clean the campsite. Every piece of trash we found was either a jewel, a dinosaur bone, a gold coin, a secret treasure map, or some other valuables. The kids LOVED it. The older kids who weren’t interested in a treasure hunt at the beginning of the game, saw the fun we were having and quickly joined in too. Getting the kids to throw their bags of treasure into the “treasure chest” (aka the trash can) at the end of the game proved a little difficult. They all wanted to keep their trashy treasures. But eventually they gave in. It’s amazing what fun & adventure you can create with just a little imagination!
