tHeory tHursday – let’s play with WHITE!

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Hi folks, Brittney here.  Its tHeory tHursday, and I thought I’d talk a little bit about color.  And not just any color, the color WHITE.

White is NOT, as you might think, the lack of color.  White is the combination of all the colors in the visible light spectrum.  It does NOT have “hue” though.  White is commonly thought of as a symbol of purity and perfection.  That’s why brides wear white!

In art, white is associated with coolness, cleanliness.  You can use white to suggest simplicity.  I have always been intrigued by LO’s that I’ve seen where people use just a plain white background, not even a white paper, just a white fill layer.  But I never dared to try it.

Well, I was forced to try it last week!!  How does that saying go?  Necessity is the mother of invention?  I was preparing my digi-journal for ordering and had to design a cover for it.  The company I’m ordering doesn’t offer a full bleed dust jacket.  The front and back covers are full bleed, but the flaps aren’t.  They just have a spot for some copy and a spot for some pictures but leave the background with a solid color.  I figured, it I left all the background white, and just designed my front and back cover on a white fill layer, I could create the illusion of a complete full bleed  dust jacket.  Does that make any sense??

Well, I opened Photoshop, got my white layer ready and the just jumped in and gave it a try.  And I LOVE the results!!  (thanks to Flergs & JanaM for their collab. kit “Caramel Pudding” which I used to create my cover)

Here’s the front:

And here’s the back:

And here’s a screenshot of how it all came together:

Anyway – I love the simplicity and clean look that scrapping on a white fill layer brings.  This will not by the last time I do it!  You should give it a try!!  You might surprise yourself like I did!!

Have a great Thursday scrappers!!

xoxo,

Words for Wednesday

words-for-wendesday-web.jpg

Hi all- Amanda Kay here! When Brittney asked me if I wanted to help out for today’s Words for Wednesday I was flattered and excited! And yeah, maybe a little… ok, A LOT nervous!! As I tried to think about what I was going to write about I immediately thought of my favorite quotes!

When I can’t seem to find the perfect words for my LO’s I search for quotes because at some point or another someone else has said the perfect words for me. My favorite site to get quotes from is Scrapbook.com. I stumbled across this site well before I ever got into digi scrapping and now I’m even happier that I did! They have thousands (ok, so I’ve never counted but just go with me here lol) of quotes and they are organized by category. So whether you’re scrapping about your baby, your husband, best friend, Father’s Day, birthdays, your pet, holidays, anything… they have it all!!

Usually when I create my LO, because I’m not the best at journaling or putting things in my own words, I search for quotes . . . sometimes I use them as wordart, journaling, and sometimes they make the perfect title for my page. While looking through the quotes I’ve also seen some that have inspired me to create a whole new LO just for that quote. This is actually why I created the LO I have to show you today. I was looking for a quote for a page I did on my sweet little puppy and came across a quote I fell in love with, of course it had nothing to do with my puppy though! I knew I had the perfect picture for it of my husband and I, then of course Brittney had the perfect kit for me to use ;) Here’s my layout:

wordwedsmall.jpg

“Kisses are the messengers of Love”. . . How sweet is that?! I read it and immediately thought of that picture and there we have it . . . a great title/journaling for my page!

So go ahead, go check out the quotes and scrap away! Maybe you’ll find a quote to go with that special picture you’ve been saving, or maybe you’ll find one that will inspire you to scrap something totally different! Just to help you out a little I’ve created some word art for you using the quote from my LO above. Here’s a preview:

kissessmall.png

You can download it HERE (sorry link expired).

We’d love to see any LO’s you come up with!! Happy scrapping!

Sunday Spotlight

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Hi my name is Katie. I’m a new CT member, and I am having a blast. My most recent assignment was to do a spotlight of a designers at ScrapMatters. I chose Brittney.

I really love her work. Look at these products…

e10a515622993c9e450c3c7cec1cb676_image_150x150.jpegca0235a38104bdba1749ddbe754e2a03_image_150x149.jpega251a50a34fc20080cb5afa34e2a7cf1_image_150x150.jpeg

Of course this isn’t all of her products. You’ll need to go check out the store to see everything.

And this is what we all ever wanted to know about Brittney…

What is your main job/career? I work part time at screen printing shop as an artist, doing the graphic design work for each order we print. Then the other half of my time is spent on my other design work from home. I have a little business called “Blessed Events” (blessedevents.blogspot.com) where I sell digital images for birth announcements, wedding announcements, holiday cards, etc. I do some freelance design jobs and then of course a TON of my time working at home is spent on digi-scrap business – designing, running this Team Blog, etc. etc. etc! I love it!!!!!

Are you married/kids/pets? I am married to my best friend Josh. We’ve been married for 2 and a half years now I we couldn’t be happier! We don’t have kids yet, and aren’t planning on any for a while. We are REALLY enjoying being newlyweds. No pets that live with us. Josh has an Alaskan Malemute named Dante, but since we rent he can’t live with us yet. He lives at Josh’s parents house.

Where do you call home? Born and raised in Utah. American Fork, Utah is my hometown.

What are your three favorite foods? Hmm . . . tough one. BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad from California Pizza Kitchen, anything Italian, and soups. I love soup!

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? I’m so boring. Vanilla Bean!

Do you prefer salty or sweet snacks? salty

What is your favorite beverage? Dr. Pepper!
What is your least favorite food? Sloppy Joes
PC or Mac? Mac!!
How long have you been digi-scrapping and how did you get into it? I was actually doing a little design project in March of last year and was looking for some “scrapbook” type elements to use in it and did a google search for “digital scrapbook” and BAM this entire world fell down upon me! I was already into graphic design and paper scrapping so combining my two worlds was incredible!! I keep waiting for this obsession to cool off or fizzle out and there’s NO SIGN of it!! I am totally addicted.

What program do you use to digi-scrap with? Photoshop CS3

What are your hobbies besides digi-scrapping? My problem is I have too many hobbies!! I love to read, I love to travel, I love beading, and art. Love to see it, create it, learn about it.

What is the most challenging part of scrapbooking for you? I know this is probably not the answer you’d expect, but for me its finding balance in the time I spend on the computer with the time I spend doing other things. I love to scrap, and if I could, I would be here all day scrapping away. But I have to find a balance between not neglecting my other responsibilities and my sweetie. So for me, the hardest thing about scrapping is finding that balance.

What would you like to learn to do (or do better) not related to scrapbooking? Cooking. I’d love to be a better cook.

What are your favorite books/authors? Adiana Trigiani is probably my favorite author. ANYTHING by her is amazing. And, like millions of other people, I can’t get enough of the Twilight series. Oh man, just thinking about Twilight gets me all jazzed!

What are your favorite movies? I LOVE MOVIES!! So this is a hard one. Some of my top favorites are: “Sleepless in Seattle”, “You’ve Got Mail”. “Something’s Gotta Give”, Baz Lurhman’s “Romeo & Juliet” and “Only You”. Total chick flicks I know!!!! I also love the Bourne movies, “Rent”, and my newest favorite BIG TIME is “Enchanted”.

What is your favorite quote? As a HUGE Walt Disney fan, I have many favorite “Walt” quotes. One I really love goes: “Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Another really good one from Walt goes: “You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.” haha. Love that one!

What is one of your goals for 2008? To keep caught up and do another digi-journal like last year, and to continue losing weight and being healthier, and of course to expand and continue my digi-scrap design work.

What inspires you in your designing? I’m inspired by art, other designers, ads, products, fabrics, nature almost anything. I start with a color scheme and a basic “look” idea in my head and then things just pour out.

What is your favorite kit (that you’ve created)? Gosh that’s a hard question!! I really have a soft spot for “Accidentally In Love” cuz it was my first kit, my first attempt to design! But I guess I’d have to say “It’s Christmas Time in the City” is my favorite kit. It’s so ME! But its really hard to say its my favorite. I love all my kits! HAHA

************

I think we love all of your kits, too. Check out the awesome things other scrappers have done with some of Brittney’s kits…(click on them to go to the gallery for credits)

Words for Wednesday – Lyrics (freebie alert!!!)

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

words-for-wendesday-web.jpg

Hi blog readers! Marci here! So, today I’m talking about using music lyrics in your pages. This is something that I love to do! I love music and have loved it all my life! My mom and dad are both amazing singers and my mom is an amazing pianist. I learned my love of music from them. So when I started digital scrapbooking I wanted to be able to put something that I love so much into my new hobby! I feel like putting in a catchy song lyric can really brighten up your page and give you the perfect title! It can also capture the type of emotion you’re trying to get across in your layout.

The first time I tried to use lyrics in a layout was for a wedding picture. I put the lyrics to our wedding song over one of our wedding pictures. This song meant and still means so much to me, so I wanted it to be the focus of the page. I also used the first line of the song for another page I did with a wedding picture.

wedding1.jpg

The next LO I tried was with some pictures that I did of our trip to Canada, where I’m from. We got to spend a lot of time with my best and oldest friend and so I wanted a statement that really captured our friendship! And who better describes friendship than Dionne Warwick!

good-times.jpg

The next one I did was a really special page that I did for my mother-in-law. She LOVES Disneyland! So for Christmas I made her a page with 2 of her favorite things, Minnie Mouse and My daughter Eden. Well of course I needed the perfect title, and for anyone who’s been to Disneyland, you know that there is a magical feeling that is in those walls! So I wanted to have a little ‘magic’ in my title!

minnie-and-eden.jpg

The next page is one that just came to me when I was in my car listening to the best song! It’s called, I’m in Love With You by Joy Williams. I was listening to the lyrics and I got a little teary eyed because I just loved the lyrics so much. It made me think of my sweet husband. So I immediately went home and started to think of how I could use that song in a LO. So I put the lyrics on top of a paper in text form, and then changed the opacity so that it looked like it was just part of the paper. Then I used the last line of the song as the title of the page!

im-in-love-with-you.jpg

So as you can see, music is something that you can use to really make a page mean more to you! SO – the next time you’re stuck with no ideas for a title or theme for a LO, think about your favorite song, or think about those classics songs that are so clever, you just have to put them on a LO! To get you started using music and lyrics in your pages, Brittney (Britt-ish Designs) created a fun freebie for everyone!

brittdes_lyrical_teamblog.jpg

It is now available for sale in the ScrapMatters’ Shop–while you’re in the shop make sure to grab our other freebies too) or link expired (4shared). Leave us some love or say hi when you download!

Here’s one I just did with one of the freebie wordarts! Isn’t this freebie awesome?! So many cute lyrics! Great job Britt…I don’t know who wouldn’t want one of these!

Happy scrapping everyone!

The Tuesday Challenge – Scrap by Numbers

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Before we get to Brittney’s latest, and very fun, challenge I am happy to announce the winners of last weeks Monochromatic challenge. This was the first challenge I have ever hosted and I decided I don’t like the pressure of picking a winner!  I feel like one of the Survivor players having to vote off my best friend. This was really hard. All of the LO’s were so good. But I promised some winners so here we go…our random drawing winner is PHOTOBUG!  She did a beautful ballet LO and wins a $2.50 gift code for the the store.  Andrea’s top pick, and winner of her choice of Summer Sweets The Mixers or Summer Sweets The Brights, is KRYSTAL for her “Too Cute” LO, which really was too cute.  Finally for my pick. I really had three favorites so it was very hard for me to narrow it down but I decided on LINZ’S Crystal Creek LO.  I just loved the striking red and black and those flowers kept catching my eye. Linz wins a $5.00 gift code to the store.  We will be sending those codes to you so check your Private Message box in a bit.  Thank you to everyone who participated. It was such a fun challenge and I am amazed at the talent we have here at ScrapMatters. You guys are all awesome.  Now that we covered a little color, lets talk about numbers…take it away Brittney.

Scrap by Numbers!

Yes, you heard me right . . . let’s scrap by numbers!! Today’s date is 1/22/08. So those are the numbers we’ll use.

Can you dig it? Here are some awesome LOs by the fabulous ScrapMatters team to get you inspired.

What Matters Monday – Shadows!

Monday, January 21st, 2008

what-matters-monday-web.jpg

It’s What Matters Monday, and today I thought we’d talk about SHADOWS.

Shadows are what matter because they are what take our digi-pages from lookin’ digital and give them depth and realism. I know as I look back on my pages, and as I can see my understanding and ability to create realistic shadows grow that my pages look better and better.

So – here are just a few little tips when creating shadows.

Tip #1) Don’t be a lazy-shadower!

Taking just a few extra minutes on our shadows really does make a HUGE difference! I have read that some people spend over a half an hour just on shadows, and I have to say, that is excessive! I don’t think you need to spend even close to that amount of time to make realistic shadows. BUT sometimes just clicking that shadow style, or doing the same old shadow work for EVERY element, is cutting yourself short! You could have a KILLER shadow on something, IF you just spend a little more time playing with settings, or warping, or whatever. And while you think it might not matter that much, a great shadow can turn a so-so LO into a WOW LO!

For example, here’s a piece of a LO with no shadows.

shadowsnone.jpg

The I added my basic shadows. I created these shadows by duplicating the layer, turning that bottom layer black (turning the lightness all the way down to black), running a Gaussian Blur filter on it, and then turning down the opacity to about 60%. Something I do over and over when creating shadows. And it looks alright. MUCH better than no shadows.

shadowsok.jpg

But (and I timed it) I spent an extra 90 seconds, just a minute and a half, clicking ctrl+T, right clicking and selecting “warp” and pulling my shadows down and here and there. I changed my shadow layers to “Linear Burn” and played a little more with the opacity and It took my elements from “good enough”, to REALLY realistic!! I think now it looks like there’s a light off to the left, shining on it.

shadowsbest.jpg

I honestly remember when I first started out thinking that spending time on shadows was silly, until I realized how fast it is and how awesome I can make it look.

Tip #2) Learn and Try

Depending on the program you use, there are lots of different ways to create shadows. I know there are even shadows created by digi-designers that you can buy and run with great results. The key is to keep learning your program and trying new ways to do shadows and see what you like best. You never know what you might learn. I learned from another designer recently that I can create REALLY good shadows REALLY quickly with some layer style settings I hadn’t tried before.

shadowsettings.png

If you can’t read it, it says Blending Mode: Linear Burn, Opacity: 65%. Distance: 5, Spread: 0, Size: 8. This works GREAT a lot of the time. I definitely play with the settings, because unfortunately, shadows are not one-size-fits-all! For certain elements I do need to create a separate layer and warp it but, anything that saves time and gives me a REALLY good look is a GREAT thing to learn!!

Tip #3) THINK

Think about what your shadows are. How deep they should be, if the thing your are shadowing would REALLY make that big of a shadow. A rub-on or stamp, or printed text wouldn’t create ANY shadow, would it? But a big fluffy flower is deep and would create a lot of shadow. And are your shadows going in the same direction? Shadows should all be thrown in the same direction. Just stop and think as you are doing shadow work. It’s those little details that make your work great.

Well, I hope this helped a little. I am in no way, a shadow expert! But I can honestly say that the more I work on my shadows and strive to be better at it, the more I like my LOs and the more I feel like my LOs are praiseworthy! HAHA! I have actually started to look forward to my shadow work, seeing how much better, more realistic and high quality I can make my already cute LO look!! Shadows DEFINITELY “matter” to me!!!

Have a happy Monday!!

xoxo,

The Sunday Spotlight!

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

the-sunday-spotlight-web.jpg

Good morning scrappers! It’s Sunday today and that means its time for The Sunday Spotlight here at ScrapMatters. When I was thinking about scrappers from our gallery who had caught my eye, I quickly remembered some GORGEOUS heritage layouts posted in the gallery by “meterr”. Little did I know what a fab lady I had stumbled upon.

spotlightpic.jpg

Meterr, a.k.a. Terri, was nice enough to answer our questions and let us get to know her a little better.

What is your main job/career? I am a stay at home mom right now.

Are you married/kids/pets? I have been married since 1989 to Jody. We met in high school. I was moved to a foster home in Jody’s hometown and we met there. We have 3 kids. Brit, who’s almost 18, Andre, who is 16, and Elijah, who is almost 4. We have a collie named Honey and a little mouse named Houdini.

Where do you call home? We live right outside of Adrian, MI. I am originally form Port Huron, MI.

What are your three favorite foods? Pizza, Mac-n-Cheese, Lasagna

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Anything with nuts, brownies and chocolate!

Do you prefer salty or sweet snacks?
both!!

What is your favorite beverage? Vanilla Coke!!

What is your least favorite food? Hmmmmm . . . this might sound sick, but any type of cheap meat like cheapo hot dogs or bologna or 99 cent TV dinners.. yuck!!!! i also DO NOT drink coffee!!

PC or Mac? pc

How long have you been digi-scrapping/How did you get into it? I just celebrated my 1 yr anniversary of starting digi scrapping on Jan. 15th. I can’t afford a lot of paper supplies so downloading kits and using them over and over is really cool! I also have old pics which are on disc I love using.

What program do you use to digi-scrap with?
Paint Shop Pro 9

How long does it take you to do a LO?
Sometimes I can do one in 10 mins, but I’m a perfectionist, so I change things a lot. my ‘puter is also pretty bogged down right now and runs slow, so most of the time it takes me half an hr or more to get a layout perfect!!!! (Wow Terri!! You are fast, I couldn’t get a LO done that fast if I had 5 arms!!! WOW!)

What are your hobbies besides digi-scrapping?
My local sports teams (Detroit teams), my ladies message board called the Crazy ladies Asylum (I LOVE old asylums), genealogy, freebies, gravestone photography, abandoned places, old antique stores, collecting vintage stuff like kids clothes, toys, linens, books and magazines, listening to ALL kinds of music like ragtime, swing, 50s, 60s, 70s and I LOVE 80s to modern rock. I also love old radio programs and classic TV shows which I watch and listen to online. I love getting a piece of “trash” and turning it into treasure!

What would you like to learn to do, not related to scrapbooking?
I would love to learn to knit and make clothing on the sewing machine.

What are your favorite books/authors?
I’m a bookworm and love books from horror to medical journals, historical fiction . . . all kinds of history books (ancient religions and ways of life) bios to war. I’m also into the paranormal too!!

What are your favorite movies?
I love movies from the silent era to the 1970s and also some modern movies too. I love the golden age of Hollywood!!!

What is your favorite quote?
“If you want something done right… do it yourself!!!” and (from an old Ricky Nelson song) “You can’t please everyone, so you’ve got to please yourself.”

What is one of your goals for 2008?
To learn to make a digi kit and give it as a freebie!!!

Terri, your heritage LOs ROCK! What tips do you have for people like me who want to try Heritage, but need some help and inspiration? To start doing heritage you have to have some kind of interest in who your ancestors were, have some photos or copies of photos, or even pics of family gravestones, homes or even postcards of towns they lived in. I also use newspaper clippings, programs and other handwritten ephemera. You might want to showcase the eras they lived in, their jobs or aspects of their personalities!! It’s almost like you need to get to know them a little bit!! When we do layouts of our kids and living family members, we use words, papers and elements to tell others who they are or what kind of person they are ( messy kid, silly hubby etc) our ancestors all had their own personalities too!! i had several who were practical jokers and love to do lively layouts involving them. My great grandmother played piano and wrote poetry, so I l like to use musical themes with her layouts and sometimes poetry, including her own! Some rellies we don’t know to much about, so I usually try to use period type elements or try to use something from the pic itself (a silk curtain in the background or a certain season when the pic was taken) you really cant do wrong when making a heritage layout!! Let your heart lead you!! These people were once as alive as we are today, and I’m sure, are honored when we use their likeness in our layouts!!! Have fun and enjoy learning and sharing your families’ history!!

You’re a paper scrapper too. How do you decide what you paper scrap and what is digi scrapped? And what fulfillment do you find in both genres?
If I have a photo I REALLY love, I will do it in paper AND digi!! I can use a pic of my son crying in a playful way in one layout and maybe a serious tone in the other! Also if the photo is tiny, I will do it digi (I don’t have a photo printer) Most of the time I see a certain kit and think ” I have THE perfect pic for this kit!!” I like doing digi because I can save my family money by downloading some of the wonderful freebies available on the Internet!! I also LOVE being a CT member and showcasing a kit for the designer! As for paper, its fun to shop for it!! I do like being able to get away from the computer and watch a hockey game or good movie as I scrap with paper. Having the layout to share with family away from home is cool too!!

Terri’s got a fun homepage here and a GREAT BIG gallery here if you want to go browse her awesome stuff!

Let me show you some of my favorite LOs by Terry! As I mentioned, she’s an amazing heritage scrapper. Here is one of my favorite LOs from her gallery at ScrapbookFlair.

This LO just jumped out of her gallery to me. This is Terri’s grandfather when he was a teenager. Cool photo huh?! AND I noticed that some of the cool vintage newsprint stamps were from Detroit! PERFECT for Detroit girl! LOVE all the watchmaker elements. Then I read in her description that her great grandfather ran a watch shop in Detroit! How serendipitous for Terri to have this kit to scrap with!! WOW.

I love this ATC (artist trading card) Terri created. I just LOVE this funky vintage style!!

Wow. I’ve never tried anything like that before. But I think it looks like fun! And I love that quote!

Here’s a GREAT paper LO Terri did!

See! I told you she rocked both digi AND paper!! I love all the stamping and the big flower paper!

And finally, a non-heritage current digi-LO. She does those too! She’s like the queen of all genres!

I love the black background with the subtle snowflakes and music notes topped with the silver, frosty embellishments. And I love the message! So sweet!

Isn’t Terri just amazing?! I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know her better! Hope you enjoyed looking at a little of Terri’s work and have been inspired as much as I have been!!
