Teresa here… one of my favorite learned tricks in digital scrapbooking is how to overlap elements to add interest and that extra something to layouts. There are several ways to do it. To keep it as simple as possible I am going to show you only one way today. Once you master this, you will probably figure out the other way(s) on your own but if not, no biggie, we will come back on another Thursday and share more tricks.
So here we go… we are going to take a frame and a glitter swirl for this tutorial. If you want to play along, it is from the Old Romantic kit by Mischiffis here at ScrapMatters.

I sooo hope that makes some sense and that some of you will have extra fun making your layouts today! You can do this with elements, overlapping frames to make clusters, the possibilities really are endless. Wrap up some titles and run your ribbons or stitching through the holes in the letters.
Come show us your new tricks in the ScrapMatters gallery.
Thanks for stopping by,

Hi,
Really a nice tut. The only difference I would make is that I would use a layer mask and a brush to remove parts of the swirl. I frequently change my mind about the look I want and this allows me to quickly and easily make changes by switching between black and white when using the brush on the mask.
Keep up the good work. Love your site!

Okay, I did not no this trick. I always just painstakingly erase each layer I don’t want showing. This seems so much easier. I can’t wait to try it. Thanks Teresa!

great tip Vicki…
I have only used layer masks a few times when doing things from an instruction book… I need to play with that more. I usually duplicate the layer so I can go back to the original but layer masks are sooooo much more flexible! Thanks for sharing that!
