Color Combination Theories

theory-thursday-web.jpg

Hey Everyone! Dacia here with your Theory Thursday (and a mini-challenge)! This is my first entry on the official ScrapMatters blog, so hopefully I’ll be able to teach you something helpful and fun to use on future layouts (and not bore you in the process!)

I wanted to talk about Color Theory. I am a HUGE fan of color and thought it would be fun to share some of the tried-and-true color theories/combinations.

Have you ever looked at the colors on a scrapbook page and just thought “Wow, that works!” or “Whoops…that doesn’t work.” Well, there is a method to the color madness and the colors you choose will make a difference in the mood or emotions you’re trying to express.

Let’s begin with a basic color wheel. The primary (base) colors are red, yellow and blue. By mixing 2 of your primary colors you get your secondary colors, orange, green, and purple.  Then to make it even more complicated, we’ll add the tertiary colors, which you get by mixing a primary color with a neighboring secondary color.  As far as black and white go–they are on the value scale. The farther from the center you get, the more white is in a color, or the lighter it is (like a pastel yellow would towards the outside of the circle). The closer you get to tht center of the circle, the more black gets added, or the darker it gets (like a navy blue or brown-which is a relative of orange).

color-wheel.jpg

So with that foundation, let me share some of my favorite color combinations that I think everyone should know.

color-combos1.jpg

Monochromatic Colors. A monochromatic color scheme uses one color, but 3 different shades of that color. Example: Light, Medium, and Dark Blue.

Triadic Colors. A triadic color combination comes from using 3 colors that are equally spaced (3 spaces) apart on the color wheel. This could be purple, green and orange or it could be blue, yellow and red etc.

Analogous Colors. You get an analogous grouping when you use three colors that are all next to each other on the color wheel. For example, blue, teal and green or green, yellow-green and yellow etc. This example was done using blue, green and teal-all colors next to each other on the color wheel.

color-combo-analagous.jpg

my-favorite-men.jpg

The above example is another analagous color combination – green, light green and yellow – done by Stacy (shutch) I think those colors look so great with her sepia toned photo!

coolasacucumber_2.jpgComplementary Colors. Here is another analagous color combination done by Kristie (krisser12). She used blue, green and yellow. She skipped every other color on the cool wheel, which is just another variation of analagous. The colors look great with her black and white photo and all the squares.

Next are Complementary colors, which use different shades across from each other on the color wheel, such as red and green, or yellow and purple or blue and orange (like this example using Britt-ish Designs Dreams Do come true kit).

color-combo-complementary.jpg

Split-Complementary Colors: This is a grouping of colors that uses a color and it’s complement’s neighbors. So instead of using red and green, you would use red and yellow-green and teal. This example was done using Ellie Lash’s Ladybug Picnic kit- blue, green and red-orange.

color-combo-split-complementary.jpg

Note* Here is another helpful tip for color combinations that consist of three colors: The 60-30-10 rule. Choose a dominant color and use it for 60% of your layout.  Then pick your 2nd color (not necessarily a “secondary” color) and use it for 30% of the layout. Lastly, choose your 3rd color (your accent color) and use it for the remaining 10% of your layout. It helps keep things on your layout more balanced.

Hope that helps and wasn’t too long and boring. Try joining in on the mini-challenge by making a page or two using one of the color combinations. Submit your entries in the gallery, describing how you chose your colors and leave your link in the comments here on the blog. Next week I’ll pick my favorite and also randomly choose a winner to receive one of Britt-ish Designs fabulous kits! Good luck and happy Scrapping!

Words for Wednesday

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Hi all- Amanda Kay here!! I’m delighted that I was asked to help out with Words for Wednesday again! Although, I did have some trouble coming up with something to talk about today. Our other amazing CT members have covered so much and had such great things to teach you and share with you. However, I was talking to Brittney and she gave me a wonderful idea of what I could talk about so here goes..!

Have you ever been in your scrapping zone (yeah you know the one where you ignore everything and anyone around you because you’re so wrapped up in your layout that you can’t bare to pull away from it yet?) and you’re putting the finishing touches on it, come up with a perfect title, go grab that alpha that matches, and… wait… there’s no alpha? I know I’ve been in this situation plenty of times and there’s a very easy fix for it!!

Pick your favorite font and type out your title. Drag your favorite paper (or two, or three, or… you get the idea) from the kit you’re working with and lay it over your title, now create a clipping mask. In Photoshop this is done by going to Layer>Create Clipping Mask (or Alt+Ctrl+G) . TaDa!! Now you have a spectacular alpha that matches your layout to a T!

So go ahead, go make those titles beautiful and then go show them off at our gallery!

Here’s a little alpha freebie, made with one of my papers, for those who stayed and played along with me today!akay-alphapreview.png

See you next time.. Happy Scrapping!

The Tuesday Challenge–One Hour Scrap!

Monday, March 17th, 2008

the-tuesday-challenge-web.jpg

Happy Scrap Girl here with this weeks new challenge.I don’t know about you, but I tend to be a very slow scrapper – it can take me several hours to do a page. As a busy mom with 2 little girls, I’m finding myself falling further and further behind on “catching up” with all those pictures.

So, my challenge to you today (and myself!) is a ONE HOUR CHALLENGE!!! Yup, you heard me, you’ve got to complete an entire layout in just one hour. Are you up for the challenge??

Here are some ideas to help you complete those layouts in a snap.
• Use a template to help you plan your page design
• Start with a quick page as your base and add your own extra embellishments and journaling.
• Learn shortcut keys for your program to speed up the process
• Use already decorated embellishments – such as embellished frames or page borders- to work even faster
• Journal your event as it happens in a notebook. Then when you scrap you don’t need to look up dates and you have keywords to use as prompts on your pages
• Check out this Thread in our forum for even more tips to speed up your scrapping!

Are you ready for the rules?
1.) Set your timer for 1 hour (and not a minute more) – when it goes off, you are done with your page.
2.) You must use:
• At least one photo
• A minimum of 3 embellishments (flowers, ribbons, brads, whatever you like)
• List or bullet style journaling
3.) You’re not allowed to go over the 1 hour time limit, once the hour is up, you are done – even if there’s more you’d still like to do!
4.) When you are done, post the LO in the gallery, then show the picture here along with a link to your gallery so we can leave you some lovin’!

Oh yeah, did I mention there would be prizes??? TWO $5.00 Gift cards to the shop – one for a random winner – and one for my personal fav. AND everyone who participates will get this template for FREE!

Here’s my LO for the challenge – completed in 54 minutes!

Here’s some more inspiration from our CT gals:

This is from Lindsay – Love those fun pictures!

This is Shari’s – I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the way she did her title on here – and notice how she changed the color of her font from black to white to make it show up better …

This one is from Stacy – doesn’t that ribbon wrap look perfect???

And last, but certainly not least is Sya – can you believe she did this in just a half an hour??? Beautiful!

The Sunday Spotlight – Mandy Rae!!!

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

It’s the Sunday Spotlight and this week I get to spolight one of wonderful, talented, oh-so-fabulous Creative Team members!!

Mandy Rae!!!

Mandy Rae is such an asset to our team, and I was so so excited to get to know her more!

Mandy Rae, what is your main job/career? I am a SAHM (stay at home mommy) And I design for Divine Digital on the side.

Are you married/kids/pets? I am married to my wonderful brave solider Tony.  He serves in the USAF! Together we have a beautiful little girl Zoey, who will be 2 in March.

Where do you call home? We are in the military, so home is where we are from and our families are and that is in Ohio but right now we are stationed in South Dakota Ellsworth AFB

What are your three favorite foods? I love love love bacon cheese burgers lol and I also love pizza and chilli cheese fries lol I am a real fast food kind of girl lol

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Ooooh. Let me see there are so many to choose from but I think just plain vanilla.  But, I really like sorbet even though really it isn’t ice cream.

Do you prefer salty or sweet snacks? I like both, but I think sweet more!

What is your favorite beverage? Cream Soda

What is your least favorite food? Hot Dogs. I hate them unless piled with a million toppings.

PC or Mac? PC

How long have you been digi-scrapping/How did you get into it? About 3 years now.  I started one day just browsing the computer and discovered it and was hooked ever since. lol  You know how that goes.

What program do you use to digi-scrap with? I am using Adobe Photoshop 8

What are your hobbies besides digi-scrapping? Hanging with my daughter and getting into as many activities as I can for military spouses. Oh, and shopping. I love to shop even if it is just for groceries.

What is the most challenging part of scrapbooking for you?  Journaling. I am a horrible writer.  Lol!

What would you like to learn to do (or do better) not related to scrapbooking? I think I would like to learn to fix my own car. lol With my hubby gone, I hate to have to call the other guys in the squadron to help do silly stuff like that.

What are your favorite books/authors? Well, I don’t know that I really have a favorite. I know I like James Patterson and Cathrine Coulture and I am starting to get in to Jodi Picult, but I am not sure if I am hooked on her yet. I do love the Chicken Soup for the Soul books.

What are your favorite movies? I love Dirty Dancing and Grease all those fun ones.  Oh, and the Notebook. Such a tear jerker. LOVE LOVE LOVE that one. I am sure there are a million more but those are my top 3

What is your favorite quote?  Favorite quote hmmmmmmm I think it would have to be do unto others as you would like done unto you! Got to live by the GOLDEN RULE!

What is one of your goals for 2008? Become more independent. My husband usually takes care of everything. My only job is to take care of my daughter, clean, cook and spend the money faster than it comes in. lol  But with my husband being deployed for most of the year, I am going to have to learn to be on my own and take care of everything.  Something I am definitely not use to.

How long does it take you to scrap a page from start to finish? ummm I think at least 10 min for my most simple ones but I have taken hours before!

I really love how you are able to use patterned papers in your scrapping!  I have a hard time with that!!  Are you drawn to the patterns more than solids?   Yes, I like pattern a lot more than solids. I think they just are more me. busy busy busy lol a little wild and a lot more fun!

I asked Mandy Rae to pick a few of her own favorite LOs that she’s done.  It’s one thing to look through someone’s gallery and pick your own favorites, but its interesting to see what the artist picks as her favorites.

In Mandy’s words:

“This is my first 2 page lo and I just loved it!”

“This one was my first time using extractions and I love how it turned out.”

“This was hard for me because I am not a big journaler, let alone about myself.  But I just love the feel.  It is really a lot different than my typical lo’s.”

It’s obvious that Mandy likes to try new things when she scraps.  All her favorite LOs are first tries and new stretches.  Interesting, huh?!

Some of my favorite LOs of Mandys . . .

I LOVE THIS LO!  And its not because she used my kit,  It’s fun and fresh and young.  I just love everything about it. (And how hot is Mandy??!)

This one is so adorable!  Her little Zoey makes for quite a cute LO!

One last one . . .

LOVE the color scheme on this one and the SWEET photos!

Mandy is just an amazing girl, and an amazing scrapper!!  We are soooo lucky to have her here at SM!  Check out Mandy’s gallery here and enjoy the inspiration.

Have a great Sunday everyone!

That little somethin’ extra

theory-thursday-web.jpg

Hi all! Jeni here bringing you a quick Theory Thursday. (Eek! My first!) I have been having so much fun browsing through the gallery here at ScrapMatters. There are so many great scrappers out there! I love to look at all those layouts especially the ones that really jump out at ya! But what makes them jump out? What’s that little somethin’ extra they all have?

Well, it could be anything really! Stitching, eyelets, brads, staples, ribbons. . . you get the idea! The little extras that take your LO from good to fabulous! Here are some great examples I found in the gallery here at ScrapMatters.

This first example is by Marcistar. Check out all the staples! Now she could have just used one or two, but there are a bunch!

LOVED

credits here

How creative!  Her page doesn’t have a ton of elements all over it. It’s very simple, yet still stunning – mostly because of her precious picture – but the repetition of her staples adds that little somethin’ extra!

Here’s another example for you by ckmom12673:

normal_070323_colin_pull_kyle.jpg

credits here

This page has a couple of elements to it that make it really stand out. First she divided the photo into three pieces. That really helps draw attention to the different parts of the story. Her “date on a string” off to the side is adorable too. What an ingenious way to date your LO! Now why didn’t I think of that?!

That little somethin’ extra doesn’t have to be an element. It can be your picture, or in this case the colors (or maybe the lack of color) in the pictures. Here’s a great example by A-to-Z:

pink_layout_web_2.jpg

credits here

She could have left the photos all in color and it would still have been a very cute page, but by bringing out ONLY the pink it really ties the whole LO together. In that little photo on the far left she has only a little bit of pink. That aspect would probably have been totally lost if she had left the entire photo in color.

This next LO by snaprebelx is one of my new faves! It has so many great elements – where do I start?!

normal_attitude.jpg

credits here

Well, the first thing I noticed was her little ribbon tab at the very top drawing attention to her title and also bringing in some more pink. The next thing I noticed was her glittery file tab dating her picture. And last, but certainly not least, I love how she chose a black background. It makes all the colors pop and really gives the feel of “attitude” to her LO. Picture the page with a white background – doesn’t that give it a totally different feel?

There are so many amazing ways to use the elements we get in each kit and the best thing is that there is no right or wrong way to use them! Try using some elements in a new way today to add a little somethin’ extra to your next LO. Don’t feel discouraged if you can’t think of anything “new” though, just do what I do. Steal – ahem, I mean – “scraplift” someone else’s great idea! [wink, wink] I’ve already found several ideas I’m going to use. Have a great Thursday!

Words for Wednesday

words-for-wendesday-web.jpg

Hello all–Tami here! Today I’d like to focus on words that aren’t our own. What? Let me explain. When I was getting married, I got all kinds of advice from everyone. I had heard most of it before, don’t go to bed mad, think of each other first, that kind of thing. But some things stuck in my mind. One of my favorites was “Learn to cook lots of good food. Men love to eat! Try to have it ready when he comes home from work. Unless you’re mad, then let him starve!” HAHAHA! And my matron of honor told me to “Shower together!” Can I say that on a blog?!

Anyway, I’m sure all of you have some words of wisdom from a friend or loved one that have remained in the back of your mind. It’s time to get them out and write them down! Don’t be afraid to expand on them or change them up a bit. Just use them to find inspiration when you need a little boost.

Here is my take on the advice to “Shower Together…”

advice-web.jpg

I don’t think this is exactly what she meant, but it was sure great inspiration! :) hehehe!

So start rummaging through your brain for those little bits of advice that you’ve saved over the years and see if they can spark some new ideas for you! Have fun and I’d love to see what you come up with! Happy Wednesday!
