The Sunday Spotlight-FiveBales

August 31st, 2008 · 7 Comments

Happy Sunday morning! I’m Judy (chigirl) from the SMG here to bring you another Sunday Spotlight. Today we are going to meet FiveBales, aka Judy (just a coincidence, really!!!!), and she’s a newbie to our wonderful little community. So grab your latte, your tea or whatever and get to know FiveBales.

1. Your screen name? Your real name? Which do you prefer we use in the interview?
My screen name is FiveBales. I got the name for a couple of reasons. Our last name is Bales, and there are five in our family; two of us and three kids. We also had a small farm in eastern Washington that we named FiveBales. We did grow hay and actually did get more than five bales off of the small acreage. My real name is Judy. I’ve noticed that there are several other Judy’s on the site, too. Using either FiveBales or Judy is fine with me.
2. What is your main job/career?
I am a retired teacher. I started my career in 1964 and retired in 2000. There were a couple of retirements in between for kids and moves.
3. Are you married/children/pets?
I am married to my high school (actually grade school) sweetheart. In December, we will be celebrating our 47th anniversary. We have three grown children and 4 grandchildren. We also have a Boston Terror…er I mean, Terrier and a Siamese Cat. People ask, “How do they like the boat?” I always answer that they don’t have a choice to like it or not.

4. Where is home for you?
That’s a difficult one to answer. My husband and I grew up in Long Beach, Washington. We then traveled to eastern Washington to attend CWCE, as it was called then. We spent our years in education in several towns in eastern Washington and spent the longest time in Warden. After we retired in 2000, we moved aboard the boat for the summer and onto the motor home for the winter. We called wherever we are docked, anchored or parked home. Last winter we bought a small place near Yuma, Arizona.
5. What are your 3 favorite foods?
My favorite meal is pork chops, boiled potatoes and white gravy.
6. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Moose Tracks or as my husband calls them, “Moose Turds”. I wasn’t too happy when our 3 year old grand daughter asked loudly for Moose Turds in the grocery store….
7. Snacks…Salty or Sweet?
Both, but more salty than sweet.
8. Beverage of choice?
Milk or water with meals and a glass of red wine (Yellow Tail, Shiraz) everyday; for health reasons, you know.

9. What’s your least favorite food?
Liver. I remember as a child trying to feed it to the dog under the table or hiding it in my glass of milk. Neither worked!
10. PC or Mac? What program do you use?
PC. We have a desk top and two laptops with us on the boat. One of the laptops is used just for navigation, though…no scrap booking on it! I use PSE 6 for scrap booking now, although I started out with PSP and then Photo Impact.
11. How long have you been digi-scrapping? How did you get started?
I think my daughter and I started at the same time. I can’t remember who started first, but she has sure surpassed me in skill. I think we got addicted in 2005.
12. What was your 1st LO about?
It was about a trip to Disneyland and it was HORRIBLE, and NO I won’t show it….ever.

13. Do you have any other hobbies besides digi-scrapping (are there other hobbies)?
Photography is my main hobby. Both my husband and I have Canon DSLR Rebel xti’s. He has surpassed me in taking photos just like our daughter has in scrapbooking.
14. What is the most challenging part of scrap booking for you?
Lots of things…right now it’s getting clusters to look good and not just a jumble of elements. I’m also challenged by designing LO’s that look artistic rather than elementary (school that is). I’m constantly looking for ideas for LO’s and downloading templates. Thank you all for your great examples that I can copy as well as templates I can use.

15. What would you like to learn to do (or do better) not related to scrap booking?
I’ve been trying to teach myself Spanish for a few years, but…forgetfulness at this age keeps interfering.
16. What are your favorite movies/TV shows?
Over the last two weeks, I would have to say that the Olympics got all my attention and then next week the U.S. Open tennis tournament starts. AND I won’t miss any of the Seattle Seahawks games. I also watch reality shows: Survivor, American Idol, America’s Got Talent and Dancing with the Stars to name my favorites. Fox News, especially Greta, is another favorite. Yes, we do have a TV on the boat and we have Follow Me TV so our dish turns with the boat when we are on anchor.
17. Describe your “scrapping” environment. Music? TV in the background? Drinks? Snacks? Where?
Well, it’s wherever we are at the moment; on the boat, in the motor home or in Arizona. I feel like I have to really concentrate on what I’m doing, so I don’t like background noise, but I do a good job of tuning it out…just ask my husband.

18. If you only had 2 elements to use on a LO, what would they be?

Stitches and text on a path. Sorry to say that text on a path is not available for PSE 6 users.

19. Would you like to share a little known fact about you…?
Hmmmmm Well, I really enjoy watching football. I have been a faithful Seattle Seahawks fan since the team started in 1976. That’s a lot of years to go through thick and thin. And I probably know more about American football that most women do, but I don’t know anything about European Football, aka soccer.

20. Can you tell us a little about your scrappin’ style?
I like muted backgrounds, grunge, and generally more than one picture on a page.
21. Favorite LOs you’ve done?
Mine:

And here are some from the ScrapMatters gallery that Judy likes:

22. How long have you been a member at ScrapMatters?

I have been lucky enough to have and joined this great site on July 15th, 2008. Not that long, but it feels like home here….

23. Do you have any suggestions for kits you’d like to see in the SM store?

I like the new trend in elements like the ones that nonnie used on her page. Don’t know what they are called, but they are colorful and a bit cartoony.

Terrific spotlight Judy (chigirl) loved getting to know the other Judy (fivebales) better. What an interesting life to go back and forth between beautiful Puget Sound in the summer and warm and sunny Yuma in the winter.
