Project reNEWit…Altering a book

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Hello! Dawn here with another reNEWit project. I have always loved altered art, mixed media, and just playing in my art supplies. And this year I am finally making some altered books for my family. But these are just altering the outside, and making on old book into a frame of sorts. I love being able to re-use an old book that was destined for the garbage heap. You can find cheap books at second hand stores and when the library has their sales.

Years ago, I started collecting books, and every time I saw a neat one or a title I liked, I would pick it up. So I have quite a few to choose from right now. And I found the perfect title on my books to use for my projects. I did 2 books to show you 2 different ways you can do this.

This first one I started out wanting to do it the way I did the second book I will show you in a bit, but I loved the kit so much I got a little carried away, so this is what I did.

First, I measured the outside on the front of the book. You will want to remove the dust jacket if it has one and put it in your stash or throw it out. I wanted to keep the same spine, so I measured from the overlap on to the edge, then added about ½ an inch or so, so I would have space to fold it over onto the inside of the book. Then I created the layout to those dimensions and just printed it out. I also printed the same thing but with just the background paper so I could put that on the back of the book. I used my Xyron to put adhesive on the back of both pages and then from there it is just a matter of lining it all up and smoothing it down. I opened the book and made my edges go around to the inside. It really doesn’t matter what it looks like inside because no one is really going to see it.

Now at this point, you can leave it as is, which is what I did. Or you can glue all the pages together. Just put some glue on the outside edges, with the book closed, and then put some clamps on it until it is dry. I personally don’t do it this way, because I like the book to be able to stand up on its own without falling. If you want it all glued, you will need a stand to set it on. So, here is my first example, I hope this all makes more sense once you see it.

I thought the title of the book was perfect to go with the picture of my daughter and her husband, and so I repeated it on my layout.

Now for the second option. This one looks more like a frame. You will need the following items besides the book for this one.

An awl, drill, or something to put 4 holes in the cover.

A piece of glass. The size of your book, and of course your choice, will depend on the size you need. For mine, I just picked up an ugly old frame and used the glass from that. If you want to make a few of these, you can probably go to a hardware store and get a piece and have them cut it in the sizes you need. Mine on this book is slightly bigger than 4×6.

2 pieces of thin elastic. Again, I used something I had around the house, which was a ponytail holder. The ones you can purchase by the dozens cheap, lol. I just cut it.

Any other items you may want to add, such as: ribbon, charms, paper strips, etc.

And of course, some adhesive if you want. Gotta love the xyron!

OK, so here we go. I made my layout about the size of the glass, which was 4×6. Then I printed that out, borderless.

I used the new welcome kit by Erica Zane from ScrapMatters, and really liked the red against the black of the book, so I left it quite plain. I didn’t add any other embellishments. If you are going to add anything that you want to go under the photo, make sure you put that on first. Then you can attach the photo to the book, or you can leave it without adhesive so you can change out the picture. It’s entirely up to you. I attached mine permanently. Then I set the glass on top of the photo and marked where I wanted the holes to go, as close to the outside edge as you can, maybe ¼ of an inch in. This is where the elastic will go to hold the glass on.

Then thread the elastic from the inside cover out to the outside. I just tied a knot on each end, but you can use whatever you want, maybe a twig, some sort of hook, anything that will keep the elastic from going through the hole. Then bring it down to the bottom hole, and thread it through to the back and tie it or attach it to whatever you have chosen. It should be kind of tight against the book. Repeat for the other side. Then all you do is slide the glass under the elastic and you have a book frame! It really is very easy to do and you can do it in a night.

Another idea is; you can print out digital papers and arrange them how you want on the book and just use a picture you have. Add any embellishments, and then put the photo and the glass on top of that in the same manner. And here is my book.

Again, I thought the title a good one, because it is of father and daughter and the title is Tell Me Your Dreams, which I just thought fit. And remember, you don’t HAVE to match the title to your photos, I just lucked out. I hope you have enjoyed this and I would love to see if you make one, so be sure to post it in the gallery. And now a few words from Donna!

Hey All….  Donna from reCREATE.org  here to share some eco-facts on books.

According to Eco-libris –  30 Million trees are being cut down every year to produce books for the US.   Ways you can make a difference

Ideas of reuse items you might want to include in your altered book project:

Old Game board pieces
Old Playing Cards
Old Book marks

Leaves
Fortunes from Cookies
Food Wrappers
Ticket Stubs
Old Brochures
Magazine Collages

Lastly, there are a large group of people making Altered Books and many wonderful artistic techniques you can discover by googling Altered Books.

I was inspired to make one after seeing the amazing art.

Have a great weekend!

Word Up! 11/19

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Hello! Linz here with a new Word Up challenge for everyone. I’m typically not a very wordy person, so I’ll get right to the details! We’ll be doing a lyric challenge this time. I think I’ve chosen a song that EVERYONE can relate to — a love song. We all have people we love, right?! Spouses, children, parents, siblings, friends…

So all you need to do is let these lyrics inspire your page in some way. You can include a verse or two on your page, if you’d like, or maybe it will just inspire your title. It’s totally up to you!

“I’ll Still Love You More” – Trisha Yearwood

Ask me how much you mean to me
And I wouldn’t even know where to start
Ask if this love runs deep in me
And you won’t find a deeper love in any heart
You could say you couldn’t live one day without me
You could say all of your thoughts are about me
You could think no other love could be as strong
But you’d be wrong, you’d be wrong

If you say that you love me
More than anybody
Than anyone’s ever been loved before
As much as you love me
Baby, I’ll still love you
Baby, I’ll still love you more
I’ll still love you more

Ask me just what I’d do for you
And I’ll tell you I would do anything
Ask if this heart beats true for you
And I’ll show you a truer heart could never be
You could say there’s not a star that you won’t bring me
You could say there’ll be no day that you won’t need me
You could think no other love could last as long
But you’d be wrong, you’d be wrong

If you say that you love me
More than anybody
Than anyone’s ever been loved before
As much as you love me
Baby, I’ll still love you
Baby, I’ll still love you more

And for ev’ry kiss
I’ll kiss you back a hundred times
And for ev’rything you do
I’ll just do more
And for all the love you give
I’ll give you so much back, you’ll see
Got so much love for you inside

If you say that you love me
More than anybody
Than anyone’s ever been loved before
No matter how much you love me
Baby, I’ll still love you
Baby, I’ll still love you more
I’ll still love you more

Here’s my example, featuring one of my favorite photos of my son. I used Woodland Fantasy by Erica Zane, Clearly Rectangular Alpha by Designs by Tater and The Chosen One, Set 1 by Sya’s Blueprints.

A few of my fellow SM CT members have created some inspiration for you as well!

First up, a hybrid card by alamama. She used Kelly’s Apple Farm by Happy Scrap Girl, Welcome Home by Erica Zane and a hanging clip from Let’s Kick It by Britt-ish Designs. The first photo is the front of the card and the second shows the inside. Can you believe this is her first hybrid?!

Littlehiccup created this layout using a worn frame overlay by Happy Scrap Girl, Welcome Home and Where the Heart Blooms by Erica Zane, Flora Brushes by Andilynn Designs and Hardware Pretty by Simply Sweet Designs.

Here is monsu’s layout, using mainly Carpe Diem by Simply Sweet Designs.

Kimbytx used Welcome Home and Where the Heart Blooms, both by Erica Zane.

Our last layout is by melanie3boys, using Peace & Quiet by Britt-ish Designs and Andilynn Designs.

You will have until 11/30 at midnight to scrap your layout, and when you complete it, you MUST post it to the Word Up Challenge Gallery AND in the forum to get credit.

Your completed layout will earn you one point in the new Matter of Scrap Challenge System.

In addition, you can earn another point by using a newly released product (you must scrap and upload your layout within the first 7 days of the product’s release – and remember, you MUST indicate that you have used a new release). At the end of the challenge, I will choose one random layout and they will win an extra point towards their total!

Remember, no double dipping…your layout must be unique to this challenge.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Hi, everyone! Christy here to bring you this week’s Tuesday Template Challenge. A big thank you to Jeni Hopewell for this fabulous template! Have fun with it!!  The only requirement this week is that your layout needs to include some journaling — at least 5 sentences…. Tell us something special about the pics you are showcasing in your layout.

And here’s some wonderful inspiration from our fabulous CT!!

By Alamama — with Motor Mania by Britt-ish Designs

By Cyndi146 — with Home is Where the Heart is by Erica Zane

I’m excited to see what you come up with! You have the rest of the month to complete this challenge and once you post your LO in the gallery and this thread in the forum, you will receive one point. If you use a newly released product from the Scrap Matters store on your challenge layout, you earn an additional point!! But make sure you indicate in your credits that the item you used was a new release. Your LO must be posted before the end of the month to be counted toward that month’s point total.

You don’t have to use SM products to participate in this challenge, but we love it when you do! Remember, no double dipping. Each LO must be created for 1 challenge only.

What Matters Monday… Flow

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Hello again… It’s Cyndi.  I’m back to give you this week’s What Matters Monday tip.  And what Matters this Monday is… flow.

The flow topic is really just a matter of preference, but it may still be a little foggy to some, so I’ll give my two cents.

When we digi-scrap, most of us focus on our one page layouts.  It’s easy to focus on one page, it’s a nice consolidated space to work with, let’s face it, they come pretty naturally.  But when I print my pages and actually put them in an album, I try to find pages that look good side by side and don’t clash in color or theme.  In other words, pages that flow together.  So when I create a 2 page layout, it’s just that much easier to place them in the album, knowing they fit together perfectly.

Take a look at the galleries of a couple of our Scrap Matters’ members…  Paige and Heidi (click on their name to go to their gallery).  They have plenty of 2 pagers to give you inspiration and ideas.

Now, how to get there…

I’ve found that when creating a 2 page layout, it’s easiest just to treat it as one big page.  One big 12×24 page (or whatever size you’re creating)  I add all my photos and papers and embellishments on the big 12×24 document, being mindful of the middle point and not to place important face pics that might be cut in half.  Many programs have guides you can turn on that will grid your page and help with placement of photos.  When I’m done creating, I flatten my page and open two NEW 12×12 documents.  I move (click and drag) the finished LO into one of the new 12×12 documents so that only the left side of the LO shows.  Then I repeat the process with the other side.  When I’m done, I have three open documents in my window.  One 12×24, one 12×12 of the left side of the LO and one 12×12 of the right side of the LO.   (Remember to flatten the 12×12 documents too.)  I then save and send the 12×12 documents separately to the printer.

I also upload the 12×12 pages separately to the Scrap Matters gallery so that the details can be seen clearly.   But if you want to include the full 2 page LO in the details portion, just resize so that the longest side is around 800 pixels and save for web.  You then need to upload to a separate photo sharing site like Photobucket and include the IMG code in your description.

Is this all perfectly confusing now?!?!  If you need further help, feel free to PM me and I’ll try to answer any questions I wasn’t clear on here.

Thanks for reading today!  I love seeing those LOs!!

Saturday Special Nov15 – Create your own Word Art

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Hello everyone! Krista (sahlink) here for this week’s Saturday Special.

So are you ready for this week’s Saturday Special?
We are going to work on “Creating your own Word Art”!

I’m sure its a shocker that I would chose to do a challenge with word art. HA HA!! Why do I like to do this? It is such a great way to make your page your own and fill your page…yes.  But the main reason for creating my own word art is: I like to give a simple photo or photos a more meaningful message than just what the actual event was about or when photograph was taken.

You will have the entire month to complete this challenge!! When you complete the challenge you will earn 1 point. If you use a newly released product from the Scrap Matters store on your challenge layout, you earn an additional point!! YES… 2 points!! AND my favorite layout at the end of the challenge will earn another point!

Here are some different options to try when creating word art:
- Chose a word or phrase that gives a feeling or message
- Chose different font styles. (some of my favorite fonts are: Traveling Typewriter, 1942 report, Century Gothic, Garamond, Jane Austen, Susie’s Hand, Perpetua & Impact)
- Have repetitive words on your layout.
- Try lower some of the opacity’s.
- Try different font colors

Be sure to put your creations in the gallery and link here as well.

Here are some examples for you:

Backlighting

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Hello All…

It’s Cyndi, here to give you this week’s Photography Phriday!

Remember when you were a kid, and it was Easter morning and you were all dressed up in your new Easter clothes.  You mom would be fussing over your hair and she’d want to get a picture of you in your pretty new dress.  She would take you outside where it was nice and bright to get a great shot.  And then would diligently face you toward the sun, in turn blinding you for a good chunk of your egg hunting time, not to mention preserving the memory with your contorted face and squinting eyes.  Wait a minute… I think I’ve done the same to my own kids!

It’s what we’ve been told for so long.  To get a good picture you need plenty of front light.  And while there is truth to the theory, with the technology of our cameras today, backlighting may just become your new best friend.

What’s backlighting??  Well, it’s lighting your subject from the back.  And different angles of backlight will give different effects.  The point is not to rule it out because it doesn’t follow the “rules” of proper picture taking according to mom.   Have fun and experiment a little.

Look at these two pictures taken by my friend Heidi (scrappurple) at a recent photography class.

(no post processing on these photos)

The first is really a beautiful picture (good job Heidi!) but the backlighting in the second just adds a new level of warmth and drama with the light coming in over her hair.  That’s just one example.

Check out the article ** HERE **  for some more, fun backlighting suggestions and even more great examples.

Hope this helps to stretch your creativity just a little!  Happy shooting!!

Gifts for Kids

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to another Hybrid Thursday! This is the time of year that I start gearing up for Christmas. I try to get all my shopping and cards done by the first of December so I can just enjoy the month. My kids always like to give gifts to their friends, but I like to try to find something that’s not going to break the bank, and I always think it’s fun if they can help make the gift. So, today I thought I would share some ideas with you of inexpensive hybrid gifts you can make with your kids.

Candy bars are something I like to keep on hand during the holidays in case one of my kids needs a last minute gift. They are generally liked by kids (at least mine!), and if you add a custom wrapper to them, they are super cute. These are some I put together using the Holly Jolly kit by Andilynn Designs. This is a perfect holiday kit . . . the papers and elements are gorgeous!

These “candy coins” were another fun gift we did last year. These are rolls of coins wrapped in cute paper (Holly Jolly kit again!) and cellophane with ribbon tied around the ends. Anything in a roll would work . . . Life Savers, Rolos, etc. Super easy to make!

Another inexpensive gift is a customized magnet board. For the one shown below, I bought an unfinished frame at my local craft store (around $4) and a sheet of metal for the inside. The metal was less than $2 and came as a 12”x12” sheet that I cut down to 8”x10” to fit the frame. I used papers from Britt-ish Designs. I made this for a nephew who has flames painted on the wall in his room, so I was excited to find this flame in the Motor Mania kit to personalize it! I glued the blue paper down to the frame with a glue stick. You could also use Mod Podge or something similar to seal it, but I just left it as is for this one. The foam letter stickers used to spell the name came from the dollar spot at Target. The magnets are made from clear flat marbles. I used Tacky glue (which dries clear) to glue them to the paper I printed out, then when they were dry, I cut around the gem and glued them to magnets.

These next gifts are altered composition books (which I bought at Target for less than $1). I actually made these for some birthdays this month. These are so simple to make. I measured the cover of the composition book, created a Photoshop document the same size, printed it, and glued it to the book with a glue stick. Easy, cute, and cheap! I also made a little container to go along with my niece’s. It’s just an empty, clean baking powder tin. I think it’s the perfect size for her to use for pencils, crayons, or trinkets.

Okay, last but not least are the gifts my kids are going to give this year to their friends. These are matchbook-style notebooks that measure 4”x5.25” when closed. We made three different ones to give: Tic-Tac-Toe, Lines and Dots, and a sketch pad. The last one is filled with blank paper and has the child’s initial on the front, the other two are filled with grids to play the games. My older son will be able to help me with the folding and stapling, and I’ll have my younger son help with the gluing. I think it’s going to be fun to work with them to put these together.

Digital supplies for matchbooks from Dirty Feet Designs.

I hope you can get some use out of these ideas, and I would love to see any hybrid gift ideas you have!
