One of the most asked Questions…
Thursday, December 4th, 2008Hi, Dawn here today with Hybridology 101. One of the most asked questions in hybrid are what do you use to attach or glue things? I am here to try and answer that question. And the first thing I will tell you is that it all depends on what I am doing, as to which product I use to glue. In my stash I have the following things that I turn to again and again.
*glue stick
* craft glue
* xyron sticker maker, 5” and 9” creative stations
* foam dots and glue dots
* gell medium, matte
* Paper glue
*tape runner
* the super stick red tape (I can’t remember what it is called, but you will know it by the color)
Basically, you name it and I have it or have tried it, lol. So, when do you use what? Lets just go down the list.
I use the glue stick mostly for cards or ATC’s or anything I don’t think will be handled too much. It is quick and I can cover a small or larger area. It is not usually permanent though.
The craft glue I use to glue 2 dimensional items to things. Like beads, metal objects, and stuff like that.
I use my Xyron the most as it is easy and gets edge to edge and is permanent.
I use the foam dots when I want a little dimension to my paper accents, whether it is just a paper circle or something else that is small like that and is not heavy.
The gel medium can be used like mod podge to cover something, but you always have to be careful when applying it to ink jet prints as it can smear. To stop that from happening I also have Krylon Workable Fixatif. I spray a couple coats on my print and that will stop the running. The Gel medium can also be used as glue. I don’t use mod podge myself because it tends to leave a kind of sticky feeling on objects sometimes.
Paper glue is manufactured just for paper and will not wrinkle the paper, like any other wet glues will more than likely do. And I use this when I am attaching paper to paper and for some reason don’t want to use the xyron.
The tape runner gets used the most after the xyron. It is easy and you can put it exactly where you want it. And it fits into my tote for when I am traveling.
I use the red tape when I really don’t want something coming off or with ribbons and stuff like that.
Of course you don’t have to have all these different glues to do hybrid, but I have been playing in mixed media for many years and have built up my stash. I would definitely say to have the cheaper items in your stock, like the craft glue, the glue stick, the glue dots, and the tape runner. If you are using craft glue to glue paper, just remember to thin it with a little water, and when it is where you want it, use a brayer or something like a rolling pin to roll over it and that will help get the wrinkles out.
I hope this has helped you some and a lot is just being able to play and decide for yourself what you like the best. There are many brands of each out there so you have a wide selection to choose from. Have fun with hybrid and you find it is super easy and fun.
