YAY…My first challenge as a ScrapMatters Girl, and of course it’s one of my favorites!! It’s time for the Tuesday Template Challenge and I have created a template from a LO I did a while back for a SS. There is no special theme or set of rules, so use it as is, flip it or make it your own…just be sure to have fun!

The “Fine Print” aka the Matter of Scrap Challenge rules:[/
You have all this month (September) to complete the layout. Upload it to the gallery, and leave BOTH the image and a link as a reply to this post!

You will receive one point for completing the challenge. You can earn an additional point for using a new product from the ScrapMatters store (PLEASE indicate you have used something new when you leave us the link in the forum), and one lucky winner will receive one more point - I will be doing a random draw!

Remember, no double dipping...your layout must be unique to this challenge.

Happy Scrapping!!

Here's the template

Saturday Special 8/29

thesaturdayspecial2

When I am scrapbooking I love to “wrap” ribbons around pictures. Today I am going to show you how you can take a straight ribbon and “wrap” it around a photo.

To start with- place your ribbon on your layout where you want it.

ribbon1

Next- using your selection tools, select the part of the ribbon you want to delete. I like to leave a little bit of the ribbon hanging past the frame. This is the part that is “wrapping” around the frame.

ribbon2

Next select your Burn tool. It is in the same place as your dodge tool, but it has the little hand icon. Then at the top where you can adjust your tool settings, lower the exposure (kinda like the opacity). I also like to start by darkening the midtones first. I always start with a low exposure first and then build it up. If you need to you can go back and darken the shadows and highlights as needed.

ribbon3

Lastly before you start you want to change your brush. It’s best to work with a brush that is about the same width as your ribbon and that has soft edges.

Make sure you have your ribbon layer selected, and now “paint” down the side edge of your ribbon, with part of your brush hanging off the side of the ribbon. I start on the outside and then do more vertical brush strokes as I work my way in towards the photo. Adjust your exposure as needed- and remember that less is more! Finally don’t forget to add a shadow to your ribbon and you’re done!

ribbon4

And here’s my final layout I created using the Jingle All the Way kit by GG Digital Designs and the template from It’s Hip to be Square by Denise Beatty Originals.

temple-square-lights

Here is an example done by Heather using the new kit Bliss by Andilynn Designs. She wrapped the lavender lace around the stems of the flowers.

And lastly here is an example by Jen using the new kit Explore.Learn.Grow by Shalin Studios and the EZ Date Labels by Erika Zane

BigSchoolcopy

Your challenge is to create a layout that has a ribbon “wrapped” around something. You’ll get one point for posting your competed layout in both the gallery and in the challenge forum thread.

Here are some quick reminders about the Matter of Scrap Challenges:

*You can get one extra point if you use a new release product within one week of it’s release (be sure to note in the forum thread that you used a new release product).

*Remember there is no double dipping between challenges- each layout must be unique to each challenge.

*You can use whatever supplies you want- they don’t have to be from ScrapMatters.

*Since this challenge is at the end of the month you also have ALL of September to complete it. (If you finish it in August though, you’ll get your point as part of your August total.)

That’s it- go have some fun!

Hybrid tutorial and product review

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Hello everyone,

I’m very excited to be bringing you our very first hybrid tutorial and product review here on the ScrapMatters blog!  Whoo hoo!  Hybrid can be a whole new world to some scrappers, but once you realise what you can do with your digitial supplies and a few other basic tools, you’ll never know what hit you!  Really, it’s not that hard to make a start into the world of hybrid and to expand your creativity at the same time, so we’re hoping our tutorials and product reviews will help you newbies along somewhat and for those already hybrid scrapping, you may just learn a tip or two!  I’ll also be posting this tutorial in our Hybrid Is Hot forum if you want to come and follow the discussion.

Today I’m going to be decorating a paper gift bag for a 5 year old girl and I’ll show you how easy it is to grunge up your projects with a bit of distressing.  I can’t live without my inks pads and I love to distress all of the goodies I make.  And with a little paper tearing and paper curling, you can add to the worn and tattered look of your project.

The birthday girl will have her very own personalised bag that I can pop her present into.  I picked up a bundle of these large bags from my local party supply store.  For the digital portion of this bag, I have used Jennifer Barrette’s fab SCHOOL GIRL ROCK kit. I also found a piece of 12×12 inch scalloped Bazzill in my paper stash.

Amy1

Next I created the digital portion of the kit to be adhered to the front of the bag.  I wanted a layered effect, so I firstly printed off a sheet of Jen’s houndstooth paper, then my digitally created page including the personalised birthday greeting.

Amy2

Next up, I got my favourite distress inks out by Tim Holtz.  I have used Black Soot for this project but my favourite colours are Walnut Stain and Vintage Photo.  I use these on just about all of my projects to add some depth and age where needed.  Your projects will have so much more warmth and dimension to them with a little ink added around the edges.  I applied my ink to this project directly with the ink pad, but you can use a soft sponge which gives you a more softer look.  You can always add more then but when applying the ink directly with the ink pad, you immediately have it on thick and dark, depending on how moist your ink pad is.

Amy3

I then took my houndstooth paper and started to tear it up to fit within the boundaries of my scalloped cardstock.  I just love to tear my papers freehand and then you just take the edges and roll them and scrunch them up for an even more grungier look.  After I finished curling the edges, I swiped some more black in around the edges.

Amy4

Amy5

And now that all my inking was complete, I used double-sided tape to adhere the cardstock and houndstooth paper to the bag.  For the digital layout, I used 3D foam tape to give it a little lift from the rest of the bag, again adding depth and dimension.

Bag-web

Once I purchase the birthday gift, I’ll add it to the bag and tie it up with some matching ribbons and add a hanging card or a tag from Jen’s kit.  It’s just gone midnight here and I wanted to post this before I went to bed, so once I complete the other little additions, I’ll update my post in the Hybrid Is Hot thread.

This was a very inexpensive way to jazz up your wrapping of a gift and I hope our little friend thinks it’s pretty cool too!

Good Monday Morning to You!!

Monday, August 24th, 2009

It’s Cyndi here with some awesome photo tips for you from a very trusted source… Kodak!  I don’t know about you but I’m always looking for ways to make my pictures better… aside from buying that really expensive lens I want right now :)   When I stumbled onto these tips, I knew I had to share.  Enjoy!

TOP 10 TIPS FOR GREAT PICTURES

1.  Look your subject in the eye

Direct eye contact can be as engaging in a picture as it is in real life. When taking a picture of someone, hold the camera at the person’s eye level to unleash the power of those magnetic gazes and mesmerizing smiles. For children, that means stooping to their level. And your subject need not always stare at the camera. All by itself that eye level angle will create a personal and inviting feeling that pulls you into the picture.

2.  Use a plain background

A plain background shows off the subject you are photographing. When you look through the camera viewfinder, force yourself to study the area surrounding your subject. Make sure no poles grow from the head of your favorite niece and that no cars seem to dangle from her ears.

3.  Use flash outdoors

Bright sun can create unattractive deep facial shadows. Eliminate the shadows by using your flash to lighten the face. When taking people pictures on sunny days, turn your flash on. You may have a choice of fill-flash mode or full-flash mode. If the person is within five feet, use the fill-flash mode; beyond five feet, the full-power mode may be required. With a digital camera, use the picture display panel to review the results.
On cloudy days, use the camera’s fill-flash mode if it has one. The flash will brighten up people’s faces and make them stand out. Also take a picture without the flash, because the soft light of overcast days sometimes gives quite pleasing results by itself.

4.  Move in close

If your subject is smaller than a car, take a step or two closer before taking the picture and zoom in on your subject. Your goal is to fill the picture area with the subject you are photographing. Up close you can reveal telling details, like a sprinkle of freckles or an arched eyebrow.
But don’t get too close or your pictures will be blurry. The closest focusing distance for most cameras is about three feet, or about one step away from your camera. If you get closer than the closest focusing distance of your camera (see your manual to be sure), your pictures will be blurry.

5.  Move it from the middle

Center-stage is a great place for a performer to be. However, the middle of your picture is not the best place for your subject. Bring your picture to life by simply moving your subject away from the middle of your picture. Start by playing tick-tack-toe with subject position. Imagine a tick-tack-toe grid in your viewfinder. Now place your important subject at one of the intersections of lines.
You’ll need to lock the focus if you have an auto-focus camera because most of them focus on whatever is in the center of the viewfinder.

6.  Lock the focus

If your subject is not in the center of the picture, you need to lock the focus to create a sharp picture. Most auto-focus cameras focus on whatever is in the center of the picture. But to improve pictures, you will often want to move the subject away from the center of the picture. If you don’t want a blurred picture, you’ll need to first lock the focus with the subject in the middle and then recompose the picture so the subject is away from the middle.
Usually you can lock the focus in three steps. First, center the subject and press and hold the shutter button halfway down. Second, reposition your camera (while still holding the shutter button) so the subject is away from the center. And third, finish by pressing the shutter button all the way down to take the picture.

7.  Know your flash’s range

The number one flash mistake is taking pictures beyond the flash’s range. Why is this a mistake? Because pictures taken beyond the maximum flash range will be too dark. For many cameras, the maximum flash range is less than fifteen feet—about five steps away.
What is your camera’s flash range? Look it up in your camera manual. Can’t find it? Then don’t take a chance. Position yourself so subjects are no farther than ten feet away. Film users can extend the flash range by using Kodak Max versatility or versatility plus film.

8.  Watch the light

Next to the subject, the most important part of every picture is the light. It affects the appearance of everything you photograph. On a great-grandmother, bright sunlight from the side can enhance wrinkles. But the soft light of a cloudy day can subdue those same wrinkles.
Don’t like the light on your subject? Then move yourself or your subject. For landscapes, try to take pictures early or late in the day when the light is orangish and rakes across the land.

9.  Take some vertical pictures

Is your camera vertically challenged? It is if you never turn it sideways to take a vertical picture. All sorts of things look better in a vertical picture. From a lighthouse near a cliff to the Eiffel Tower to your four-year-old niece jumping in a puddle. So next time out, make a conscious effort to turn your camera sideways and take some vertical pictures.

10.  Be a picture director

Take control of your picture-taking and watch your pictures dramatically improve. Become a picture director, not just a passive picture-taker. A picture director takes charge. A picture director picks the location: “Everybody go outside to the backyard.” A picture director adds props: “Girls, put on your pink sunglasses.” A picture director arranges people: “Now move in close, and lean toward the camera.”
Most pictures won’t be that involved, but you get the idea: Take charge of your pictures and win your own best picture awards.

Saturday Special 8/22 Mini Pics

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Like many of you, I peruse popular digi-scrapping galleries to see the latest trends out in digi-land. One that has caught my eye lately is the miniature picture. I just love looking at a layout and noticing a teeny picture highlighting part of a picture or repeating a theme. A mini picture does just that, draws your eye to some detail on the layout. I’ve used mini-pics when I’ve blended a larger photo, but want to draw the eye to a particular detail in the picture. Another great use for miniature pictures is when you want to highlight the details in a picture: the clasping of hands, a sweet smile, or a silly saying on a shirt. Or how about a layout that features a lot of journaling and includes just a tiny picture to emphasize a point? Love it! And let’s just admit it now, mini-pics are seriously cute!

In my layout, I’ve chosen pictures of my sister with her newborn baby. To form the mini-pic, I just duplicated my photo, and clipped my new layer to a heart-shaped element. I wanted to reinforce his sweet spirit, so I added angel wings to the heart and placed the picture near the top, floating to heaven. My sweet nephew passed away from SIDS just three days after this picture was taken and this layout will be included in a scrapbook of Justin’s life for my sister. I wanted to remind my sister that her son is waiting for her in heaven and one day they will be reunited, “never to part”. This miniature picture seemed the best way to communicate those feelings on the page.

Our fabulous CT has come up with a few samples for you.

From Christine, using “Everyday Memories” by Chelle’s Creations and Juno Designs:

Liz (mommy22girls) used “Baby Jackson” by Mickey B and “Hopeless Romantic” by Sya’s Blueprints and Stolen Moments:

Jan (Quiltymom) used “Spread the Wealth Templates” by Denise Beatty Originals and “Dessert” by Juno Designs:

Cristina used “The Ballad of Night” by AnnaBV Designs:

Jen used “The Happy Place” by GG Digital Designs:

And sarahtawisha used “Blessed” by Sahlin Studios:

For your challenge, scrap a layout and include a mini-pic. Clip your photo to an element or crop it really small and tuck it in a cluster somewhere. You can include as many bigger pictures as you would like, as long as one of your pictures is in miniature. I can’t wait to see your creations! Remember to post in the Saturday Special gallery and the Saturday Special thread in the forum to get your point. An additional point will be given for using a ScrapMatters new release. And I’ll be choosing my favorite to receive a bonus point! See you in the gallery!

I’ll Pencil You In – August

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Hello everyone! The summer sure is flying by but I hope you are enjoying it! I also hope you had the chance to take many pictures; I know I did, and I picked one of my favorites of this month to use as calendar topper for the month of August.

Let me remind you what the I’ll Pencil You In challenge is about. A personalized calendar makes a great Christmas gift for parents/grandparents, and I know I love seeing my own calendar every time I walk into my kitchen. But who has the time to get a calendar ready in December? That’s why we’re working on our 2010 calendars one page at a time, so by the end of the year we’ll only have to put the pages together! If you haven’t been playing along so far, it’s not too late to join in!

Many of us have been creating calendar toppers or calendar pages only digitally so far, waiting to have them printed or print them ourselves and assemble them at the end of the year. Others have been printing each page as soon as it’s finished. Whatever works for you, is good: as long as you hold your calendar in your hands in time for Christmas!

So now let’s see some inspiration from the CT.

I used Erica Zane’s gorgeous Where the Heart Blooms and Fill In The Blank to create my calendar topper:

Here’s Jaime (ocmath)’s page:

and this is Liz (mommy22girls)’s calendar topper:

finally, here’s Kim (tgmousechick)’s page for February using Love Bytes by Britt-ish Designs:

It doesn’t matter which month you complete, as long as you get one page ready for your 2010 calendar!

As always, here are the guidelines for the challenges at Scrap Matters:

- entries must be posted in the hybrid challenge gallery, and you must post in the corresponding thread in the forum with a preview and a link to your project in the gallery
- entries must be posted before the end of the month (August 31)
- you’ll get 1 point for completing a month of your calendar and posting it. Plus, you can get an additional point if you use a new product within 7 day from its release. Also, I’ll select one entry for a bonus challenge point at the end of the month.
