Her gallery is full of fun and creative pages! Her title work is often amazing!

So please, have fun browsing her gallery and pick a layout you’d like to use as a starting point for your own project!

Here’s a reminder of our Matter of Scrap Challenge rules:

You have all month to complete this challenge and once you post your LO in the gallery and this thread in the forum, you will receive one point.

If you use a newly released product from the Scrap Matters store on your challenge layout, you earn an additional point!! But make sure you indicate in your credits that the item you used was a new release.

Your LO must be posted before the end of this month to be counted.

At the end of the month I will choose my favourite for an extra point!

You don’t have to use SM products to participate in this challenge, but we love it when you do!

Remember, no double dipping. Each LO must be created for one challenge only.

Good luck and have fun!

I’m looking forward to seeing your pages in the gallery!

A Matter Of Snap #11 (August 2009)

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Hi Henriëtte here with this months photochallenge, the theme is not so easy this time, because it is SELF PORTRAITS!!

From an article by Nathan Marx at Digital Photography school

Self portraits are tough for a number of reasons; you can’t see yourself to know how you look until after the fact (tip don’t forget to suck that gut in). Setup can be more time consuming due to the running back and forth setting timers. Focus is difficult because again you can’t see where that focus point is resting and if you are using a timer mode there is a chance you weren’t in the frame when the camera found something to focus on.

On the other hand, shooting self portraits can be invaluable because you learn how to direct people for better portraits. What? I mean, that as you walk yourself through a portrait (of yourself) you gain insight in how to explain to people how to pose (you learn how to pose). The best way to direct people is to show them what you want and if you can do it for a self portrait, you can show your subject how to pose for you.

Another benefit is you can move your lights, angle you camera, and just do plain crazy things a subject such as friends, family or a client might not have the patience for (unless you pay them well).

So what to do? Well here are some ideas (tried and tested) to increase your chances for getting that self portrait to look like what you had planned in your mind (or close to it). Of course everything might not apply to you, but there are sure to be a few tips that you could apply and benefit from, and no matter how well you prepare there is always room for improvement.

Equipment:
I will assume you are using a DSLR, but everything discussed is applicable to other digital cameras (and some of the discussion can be applied to film).

Pick up a tripod. Nearly any tripod will do so I won’t go into much detail, but the tripod is essential as it gives a flexible yet sturdy mount for the camera.

Pick up a remote; if you are using a Nikon or Canon camera there are wireless remotes available for the less expensive DSLR’s that cost about $20. These things are a real time saver and make it easier to fine tune your self portrait without looking all sweaty by photo number 20.

Shoot tethered; most digital cameras have a mini video if not a HD video out. I borrowed my son’s DVD player (the one he watches movies in the car with) on multiple occasions for the sole purpose of shooting self portraits. This is where the remote comes in great; you can fine tune the composition by watching that little monitor, without having to run back and forth. If you have a newer DSLR with an HD out then you could hook up your laptop or HD monitor.

Lighting, a single flash can do wonders for your portraits. I won’t go into any lighting details, but photography is about capturing light. You don’t need to buy a flash, I first started learning lighting using work lights. You can pick up a small but powerful work light from home depot for around ~$15.

Coming up with ideas:
Time to talk about technique. I think where most people get stuck on self portraits is the coming up with ideas (I know I struggle here). What really got me going was thinking about what I own and how I could use it in a photo. Now I am not just talking about props, but I am talking about features also. One of my prominent features is my bald head. So could I work that to my advantage?

Just thinking about my hobbies and past times, inspired all sorts of photo themes. In fact when I sat down and listed items, I quickly had more self portrait ideas than I could shoot in a single month (shooting a theme a day).

Creating a theme:
Two items make a photo, the subject and backdrop, and I think that they are equally important. This is where your lens choice comes into play. A long lens allows you to send the back ground out of focus and narrow down the amount of background in the photo. A wide lens keeps the background in focus and allows it to be a key part of the image. Either way the background is playing a big factor by being a key element or by not distracting from the subject.

Dress the part:
In fact the clothing was a big part of my inspiration for any particular image, so you could say my clothing was what set the theme and I just had to act the part (and I mean really act). Two simple articles of clothing I found very useful were an old brimmed hat and my leather work gloves. Though the items were small and pretty common, the items were great for creating a theme.

Portray emotion:
Want your photos to look boring, then act bored. The facial and body expressions you make are huge in setting the tone of the photo. This is where having a tethered setup can really help (you will be able to see results and nail it down). Aim for over the top, I mean really go crazy. The more emotion you show the better the photo will turn out.
If you are trying to act angry, think of the guy who cut you off on the freeway and let out your pent up rage. If you want to look like you are happy then think of the guy YOU cut off on the freeway and laugh out loud (DPS does not condone cutting people off on the freeway).

Look at your photos:
When you are done look through the photos and see what worked and what didn’t. Make notes about what you liked and didn’t like. Enjoy looking though the photos. If certain photos didn’t turn out then do them again. If you do it right your going to love it!

Here is my take on the challenge:

Why is this me?
Well I don’t like to have my picture taken, I am a bit camera shy, that is why I have my eyes closed so I don’t have to look at the camera.
I am jumping on the trampoline, I am a jumpy kind of person (in a good way that is): I can’t sit still for a long time, always busy!
The surroundings; the trampoline stands on our patch of land and that is my favorite place to be!

Rules for posting:

  1. Upload your photo (and LO if you have one) to the appropriate gallery, then please link it back to the challenge in the forum
  2. Just one entrie per person will be eligible for a point, one extra point can be earned for doing a LO with one of the pictures and if you win the challenge you also gain one extra point
  3. The pictures must be especially made for this months challenge
  4. No double dipping with other challenges please

And here is Mary’s (littlehiccup’s) great entry:

I love her birthday portrait and her beautiful smile (eventhough she herself said she felt cheesy). Thank you for making your self portrait Mary, I know it is not the easiest picture to make!  Happy Birthday!!!!

Enjoying the SM community & our guests, ever so much!

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Hi, Andrea here. Our guest designers Minna, Mira Designs, and Amber, Stolen Moments Designs, have been delightful to get to know. It’s been really fun to see their fabulous designs in the shop and their designer galleries knowing that there are even more fantastic products and layouts to come. Every Friday this month, Minna and Amber will release at least one new piece of digital goodness. Summer is such a busy time for everyone, there is usually so much going on, that it almost seems like too much fun. Places to go, friends and family to visit, make it hard to squeeze extras in and yet Minna and Amber managed to fit us into their busy summer schedules. Thanks again girls.

Time passes really fast. I always heard that, but never really believed it until now. These past two years have flown by at warp speed. The SM 2nd birthday bash is coming next weekend and I can hardly believe it. The entire SM team has worked so hard to make it a celebration to remember. Treats include a huge Mega kit with purchase, another one of SM’s famous blog trains, hybrid goodies, a sale (of course) and just hangin’ with the wonderful girls that make up our big SM community. I don’t know everybody and it continually amazes me that ScrapMatters has grown so large the past two years that I don’t know everybody. But I would love to meet you. So please make sure you take time to introduce yourself in the welcome forum. I try really hard to welcome everyone back–and as part of our birthday celebration, you just really might want to make it a priority–hint, hint!

There is also a new birthday celebration kit, for you on your birthday, a little treat from us to you on your special day. You need to register in the SM forum and put your birthday–the day and month are just fine. Then watch your mail on your birthday for a no-calorie treat.

There are going to be TONS of speed scraps. I hope you all have pictures to scrap, if not go get busy! Take some everyday moment type pictures–what you do on a typical July day. Whether it’s your summer or your winter, you owe it to yourself to capture the seemingly unimportant events that make up your days, for they are what make up your life. I usually take tons of pictures, but don’t get them scrapped until I do a speed scrap, so I am looking for the multitude of speed scraps to make a small dent in my picture file.

Well I’m through rambling, hope to see you around SM, it’s a fabulous place to call your digi-home.

Saturday Special – Review

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

This week we are going to do something a little different, we learn a new tip or technique each week on Saturday. This week we are going to put to use those skills all into one layout, so the challenge is to show us 4 things you have learned from the Saturday Special all in one layout.

For a complete list of Satuday Specials check this link to the forum to see all of them, but with each of the following layouts are links to the techniques used.

From me using Color My World from Chelle’s Creations; String from Make a Splash from Chelle’s Creations; Everyday Memories from Chelle’s Creations and Juno Designs (from July Newsletter); Border Dates from Erica Zane; Blocked Templates from Sahlin Studios; Crayon, Crayoff Alpha from Denise Beatty Originals

Uses: Healing Brush; Shadows; Create your own Word Art; Selective Blurring (on one of the photos), Intertwining and Using a Template

And finally we have this layout from Cristina also using Play All Day by Stolen Moments and Scraps by Jenn; Border Dates by Erica Zane and Stitched Newspaper Alpha by Mira Designs (our other August Guest Designer).

The techniques she used are: White space; Shadows; Inked Edges (which she had never used before); Layering; Size does matter with elements; and lastly Cristinas favorite Saturday Special Cutting Ribbon (or anything else)

Can’t wait to see what things you have learned with our Saturday Specials.
