What Matters Monday, 19 April, 2010

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I just finished the book “The Wedding” by Nicholas Sparks. This book had me thinking how us moms put ourselves last for most everything. We’re the last ones to get ready when preparing for an outing, we buy new things for everyone but ourselves, etc, etc. It dawned on me that we get so caught up in our hobbies as a result. And if you are reading this then that main hobby is the same as mine…digi scrapping! Too often we focus our pages on the loved ones in our lives; we forget to scrap about ourselves. Just like in the book I mentioned above Jane is on the sidelines and doesn’t speak up for what she wants, so let’s not be a Jane and wait 30 years to be heard…let’s be in the limelight today, right now. So I challenge you to try and scrap more about YOU; because YOU are what makes this community at ScrapMatters.com so amazing…YOU matter!

Have a great week!

LOTW and Sunday Spotlight – Kelseyll

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

As always it was a hard week to pick a LOTW.  Finally, I picked Kklatts Just Breathe! I loved the blocking and the depth of field of the pics and of course that awesome use of white space! Just stunning!

Head on over to the gallery or the forum and leave her some love!!

-Amanda (panders77)

I had the honor of interviewing one of our newest memebers of the Scrapmatters Gang..Lisa!  I was so excited to learn some more about her!

1. Your screen name? Your real name?      Kelseyll    Lisa Kelsey

2. What is your main job/career?   I am a secondary teacher, but am currently at home with my daughter.  I have filled in teaching online classes and am looking for something more permanent in that area.  I also have been a guest speaker at various high schools (including the last one I taught at) about adoption and our experience with it.  I look forward to those days each year!

3. Are you married/children/pets?  My husband and I will celebrate our 18th anniversary this year!  Our daughter, Kaitlyn, is four.  We are in the process of adoption and are just waiting for a phone call. =)

4. Where is home for you?   I would LOVE to say I’m from someplace warm and sunny like California or Florida, but no…..sigh.  We are in Washington state not too far from Seattle, rainy Seattle!  I must admit this last year hasn’t been THAT bad, but there was one year where there was rain EVERYDAY for like 89 or 90 days!  Those are not the kinds of broken records I like to see or experience!!

5. What type of camera do you use?  A simple Kodak point and shoot, nothing fancy. (insert sigh again)  I want a nice DSLR, but have to save my pennies for it along with a list of things that always seem to take priority!

6. Do you print your layouts, and if so, how?    I do print some to put up as wall art in my home, but mostly I get them printed into books.  I have used Creative Memories, Winkflash, Inkubook and Artscow to make books.  I generally get prints done at Costco.

7. What is one thing you tend not to use on layouts?   I don’t really use fantasy or whimsical kinds of elements.  I like things that look more realistic on my pages.

8. What is your favorite childhood memory and have you scrapped it?  Ok, this isn’t a favorite childhood memory, but it is a LO I did a long time ago about me being 3.  I was scrapping pics of Kaitlyn being 3 and thought I should do one of me so she could see me at that age. =)  I don’t look much different now than when I was 3 in looking at my avatar pic!  LOL!!

9. How many fellow SM members have you met in person, or already knew previously?   I was lucky enough to meet Kim Simpson (Kimpson) one afternoon last year.  That was a lot of fun!  We got together for lunch and brought some of our photobooks to share.  I have known Fonnetta in real life since we were in jr. high together.  She and I are BFF’s! =)  We are often on the phone together if you see both of us in a speed scrap! =)

10. PC or Mac? What program do you use?   I have a PC and use the Storybook Creator 3 by Creative Memories.

11. How long have you been digi-scrapping? How did you get started?  When I moved from teaching at a Jr. High to the brand new high school they had all the state of the art equipment and programs.  That was in 2000.  I started making some digital presentations to incorporate technology into my lesson plans and “scrapped” many of my powerpoint slides.  I even made some simple elements since there weren’t items readily available like now.  The first digital program I bought at home was in 2000 as well, but it was very limited and the graphics were disappointing!  I knew that if I waited long enough technology would improve.  I couldn’t afford photoshop, but when Creative Memories put out their Storybook software in the fall of 2007 I snagged it!  So, I started dabbling in it as early as 2000 but really started using it for my own personal layouts in 2007.  I now am completely converted and my paper supplies are being saved for Kaitlyn’s school projects.

12. What was your 1st LO about?  My first LO was about my daughter learning to walk and being so proud of herself.  I remember making it and I think I tried every function available on the SBC+ program!  I played with shadowing, extractions, masks, stitching, layering, fading using opaque features, etc.  After jumping into challenges I started learning other tricks like out of bound extractions and selective coloring.  I loved being able to do things digitally I wouldn’t try with paper scrapping!

13. Do you have any other hobbies besides digi-scrapping (are there other hobbies)? Digi-scrapping really is at the top of my list of things I like to do.  I also crochet baby afghans for friends, have sewn clothes for Kaitlyn, made duvet cover quilts for queen size beds and baby quilts, curtains, etc.  Then when I’m tired of that I’ll get into my cookbooks and magazines and try some new recipes.  Then I’ll discover a new book series and get totally into that, but no matter what else I’m doing I’m ALWAYS scrapping!  I don’t ever get tired of it! =)

14. What is the most challenging part of scrapbooking for you?  MY COMPUTER!!!  LOL!  It just can’t run as fast as I need it to with all the graphics.  It seems to “KNOW” when I’m doing a speed scrap too, because I have more stalling issues at that time than any other where I have to close the program and just reboot.  I really need a new one that has the graphics capabilities and a large 1T hard drive on board for my supplies!  As it is now I have 2 EHDs that are always plugged in and go with me if I travel somewhere.  A 160 gig drive just doesn’t cut it! =)

15. What would you like to learn to do (or do better) not related to scrapbooking?  Hmmm…that’s a hard one since taking pictures is related.  I’d love to get a nice DSLR and really learn how to use it, but if it has to be something unrelated, I guess gardening could be one.  I did a square foot garden last year which was a fun experience but our backyard is mostly in the shade so some items didn’t fully grow within the season.  I would like a hydroponic style garden I think!  No dirt and no bugs!!!!  LOL!  I loved my baby garden when it was brand new and we had just poured the soil in.  I hated weeding it later when the critters had moved in!!!

16. What are your favorite movies/TV shows?  My all time favorite movie still is “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” and I don’t really have a favorite TV show right now.  I’ll watch Dancing with the Stars and thanks to Tracy (Trixie Scraps) I’ve been watching the Glee episodes!  It isn’t something I would normally watch since I’ve taught high school and I’m thinking “yeah, right!” most of the time while watching, but she got me hooked!  Thanks Tracy!  LOL!!

17. Describe your “scrapping” environment. Music? TV in the background? Drinks? Snacks? Where?  I have a folding table set up in my dining/living room area so I can watch my daughter.  I usually scrap at night once she is in bed so it is quiet and I don’t play music or watch TV while scrapping usually.  I either have water or Starbuck’s Tazo black iced tea (year round!).  I stock up on that tea before the end of summer since they don’t serve it the rest of the year!  I’ve gotten several people hooked on it!

18. If you only had 2 elements to use on a LO, what would they be?  I usually am scrapping my daughter so I love ribbons/strings and flowers!

19. Would you like to share a little known fact about you…?  I was born in Germany and was blessed by the Pope when I was little. =)

20. Can you tell us a little about your scrappin’ style?  My style is that I don’t stick to one style. In looking through my gallery my pages are all different.  I never scrapped only one photo on a page when I paper scrapped because it was too expensive that way, but now I have several digital LOs where there is only one.  I do a lot of CT work and challenges and love to learn new techniques so my pages are all different and would be interesting to look at in a book.  I do not do the whimsical fantasy style layouts since I prefer realistic elements or the extreme white space pages since I like photos to be larger.  I tend to like pages that look like they might have been paper scrapped and my goal is to be able to afford printing the majority of them in a book!

21. Favorite LOs that you have done?

22. How long have you been a member at ScrapMatters?  I became a member at ScrapMatters in September 2008.

23. Do you have any suggestions for kits you’d like to see in the SM store?  I am doing the “yearbook” for my daughter’s preschool this year and am going to need a Preschool/Kindergarten Graduation kit soon!  Little kids in caps/gowns, tassels, rolled diploma, certificate that I could fill in, party confetti, microphone, etc.  Other than that I’m just excited to see all the spring and summer kits to hit the store!! They are my favorites!

24. What is your favorite part of being a member of the Scraps Matter Gang?  I love how friendly everyone is here at ScrapMatters!  I am really enjoying getting to meet new friends and work with some fantastic designers.  It is nice to be able to hop on the computer and share something I am passionate about with others who also love it since no one really participates in online digital communities where I live (that I know of).  I would love to pack my laptop up and go to a coffee shop with a friend for an afternoon of scrapping, but I just have to wait until my BFF and I get together to do that! She lives 6 hours away! =)  I think that is why I love speed scraps so much!  It feels like we are all sitting together chatting and scrapping! =)

Thanks so much for letting us get to know you better Lisa!! Check out her full gallery here!

- Dawn (Aussiegirl)

And one more thing before we sign off.. Don’t forget to check out this months Quickpage Exchange!!

Happy Spring Everyone!! I hope it is starting to warm up where you are. Here in Ohio we have warm days and then it snows! LOL! This is the season for getting outside for the first time in months! So I thought for the Quickpage Exchange we would all work on a spring themed album. Our kit sponsor is The Carrot Patch by Chelle’s Creations. This kit is packed with springy elements perfect for scrapping Easter, gardening, or just the first pictures of your family enjoying the sunshine this year! To participate in the exchange, scrap one 12×12 quickpage and get all the other participants quickpages back when the exchange has ended. The exchange begins on April 13th. The Carrot Patch will be 30% off starting on April 12 through the end of the month.

Check out the full kit here!  And remember it is 30% off for this month so go pick it up and scrap a quickpage!

The Saturday Special – Adding Texture to Your Photos

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

satspecblog

Hi everyone, it’s Fiona (aka canadianmommy) here! For this week’s Saturday Special I am going to let you know how to do a really simple but dramatic trick you can do to your photos to really make them unique. We will be adding texture to them! Adding texture can give your photos a whole new life! A subtle texture can make your photo pop or give a vintage look to your pics. A more dramatic texture can make your photo look like it is made of something other than photo paper, like canvas, or folded craft paper. There are so many options and so many textures, you’ll have so much fun playing with this technique! Let me show you……..

First you need to get your hands on some textures. There are lots of free ones out there, you can run a search or try some of these out:

Shadowhouse Creations

Mayang’s Free Texture Library

CG Textures

Grunge Textures

Texture King

Now that you’ve found some textures, pick out the photo that you want to add them to and open it up:

SS1

I chose this one and made it a sepia tone, just because it had some pretty funky colours going on, you don’t need to use a sepia photo.

Now open your texture. Drag and drop it onto your photo exactly like you would with any scrapbook paper or element. Your texture should now be directly over your photo in the layers palette:

SS2

I am using Grunge Paper 4 by fudgegraphics.

Now you will want to position your texture so that it covers your entire picture. Depending on the size of your photo, you may need to resize your texture a bit:

ss3

Now it’s time to play! With the texture layer highlighted, find the blending mode menu at the top of the layers palette. It will probably be set to "normal" right now. Click on this and you will get a dropdown menu with many different blending modes:

ss4

I find that for photos, you will usually want to use either the "soft light", or "overlay" blending modes. But you can experiment with any of them!

First I tried "soft light":

ss5

I liked the look but it was a little too subtle for the look I was going for……
Next I tried "overlay":

ss6

This was more what I wanted, but now a little strong. So next, with it still in "overlay", I played with the opacity of the texture layer:

ss7

I found I liked it best at about a 75% opacity.

And that’s it! The look I was going for! I flattened my layers so it was now back to a photo and I could drag and drop onto my layout. Check out the before and after:

ss8

You can have so much fun trying out different textures and different opacities. You can even try blending a couple of different textures over a photo at the same time! My photo has a lot of landscape in it so a dramatic texture works just fine. However, if you want to add texture to a photo that has a close up of someone, the texture can sometimes look odd over the person’s face. In this instance, you can use a soft eraser to erase that part of the texture layer before you flatten the layers.

Here a layout I made using my textured photo:

wnaturewalk

and some awesome inspiration from the CT:
from Bonnie (cursivesmile):

ArabianRoyaltyW

from Melissa (profiler_mar):

EZBreezy4-17SatSpecial

from Becca (becca372):

and from Tanya (TanyaH666):

PlayingAtTheParkLow

don’t those just rock?!

Now it’s your turn! I want you to try adding texture to one (or more) of your photos and scrap a page using that photo. That’s it! Upload it to the Saturday Special Gallery and link it back to this thread.

Just a reminder:
* You will earn one point for completing a layout. You can earn an EXTRA point for using a product that has been released in the seven days prior to posting your LO – but you have to tell me that you used a NEW product when you post so I don’t miss it!
* One lucky scrapper will be chosen to win an extra point!
* Your layout must be unique to this challenge – no double dipping.
* You have the rest of April to complete the layout.

I can’t wait to see your layouts with all those awesome textured photos!! Have a wonderful weekend!

The Saturday Special-Monochromatic Layouts

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Hello ScrapMatters Friends! Becca (aka becca372) here with you today. So, I totally went back and forth this week on what to do for this Saturday Special. It’s my first challenge and my first blog post as a ScrapMatters Creative Team Member. I thought and thought, and then settled on something I love to do with my layouts! We’ve talked here in the past on the use of color, on color schemes, and on using the color wheel…well, throw that out the window today, because we’re going to keep it simple! One of my favorite things to do when creating a layout is to use a monochromatic scheme.

A monochromatic color scheme focuses on one color, and uses neutrals (black, white, brown, grey) to accent this color. When I do a monochromatic layout, I love to pull a color from my photo to be the main color of my layout. For example, this photo of my DD (today’s her third birthday, by the way!) in her butterfly shirt.

I didn’t want the landscape colors to blend into the layout, so I pulled the color of the blue butterfly out of her shirt, and made that the focus of my layout.

So, I browsed through my kits to find one that went with this color and photo…thanks to ScrapMatters, and a slight kit addiction, I had a lot of choices. Eventually I settled on Erica Zane’s Sweetest Days kit. The next thing I did was pick 2 papers for the background that have different tones of the blue. That’s one of the tricks to use when creating a monochromatic layout-working different tones of your color throughout the layout.

This look is easier to achieve with some kits than others (take a look through our shop and you’ll even find quite a few monochromatic kits to make this challenge a breeze), but sometimes I love to mix and match from kits and element packs to create this style of layout. I also love elements that I can customize to match my layout (if you need some hints on this, check out these two Saturday Special blasts from the past, one and two,  all about recoloring elements!). Check out Alamama and Sarah Bennett’s layouts below for some awesome recoloring, and TanyaH666′s for doing a great job of pulling from TONS of  products-you’ll just have to check out both of their layouts in the gallery to see all that they did to make those gorgeous pages! !

Here’s *my* finished product, using Sweetest Days by Erica Zane, and Stitch Me Up element pack by Chelle’s Creations

time to reflect

Here’s a beautiful layout by Alamama, using Sahlin Studio’s NEW Rejuvenate, Sunshine and Daffodils, Tangie Baxter’s  Explain It,
By Becca Lightness of Being (recolored ribbon), Brittish Desgins Around the World, and NEW Trixie Scraps A Mother’s Love.

here’s a really fun, potluck-style layout by TanyaH666, using tons of Britt-ish Designs products, particularly her brand NEW Collectible Cardboard.

and last, but certainly not least, here’s a bold and bright layout using Erica Zane’s NEW What Say? kit, by Sarah Bennett

What do you think? I know I love a monochromatic layout!
Your task for this Saturday Special is to create your own monochromatic layout, using neutrals as accents only! Have fun, and I hope you like this technique as much as I do!

Here are the rules for this challenge:

* Post your layouts to the Saturday Special gallery. You will also need to link us up here so we can leave you love !
* You will earn one point by participating in this challenge. You can receive an EXTRA point for using a product that has been released in the seven days prior to your post – be sure to make a note of this in your post so you receive proper credit!
* Your layout must be created for this challenge – no double dipping.
* You have the rest of April to complete the layout.

Thanks for playing along with me, I can’t wait to see what you create!

GTL 4-7-10

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Hey Everybody!!! Kathleen here with your weekly GTL challenge. I chose to lift Britt this week. Now, I know we’ve lifted Britt before, but I went back to check and it was over a year ago so I figured that was long enough ago to for us to lift her again. Honestly, though, the girl has so many amazing pages in her gallery that we could lift her every week and still be good. :) So your challenge (and trust me, it won’t be that hard) is to find a LO from her FABULOUS gallery (found here) and then show us what you do with it!

Here are some examples from the CT and me…

I chose to lift this LO of Britt’s….

And here’s my version, using the collab kit Make a Wish by Sahlin Studio and Valorie Wibbens, Birthday WordArt by Sahlin Studio, and Painted Alpha by Sahlin Studio….

CNScrap chose this LO of Britt’s….

and came up with this awesome lift, using the collab Extinct by WM[squared] Designs and MickeyB Designs

QuiltyMom picked this LO….

and came up with this, using Taste of Germany & Norway and Around the World by Britt-ish Designs and Sahlin Stuido, and Animal Kingdom, Fairchild & Inspired by Jenny templates all by Britt-ish Designs.

LeeAndra found this LO in Britt’s gallery….

and came up with this, using the ScrapMatters March Mega kit, Kids at Play….

Alansrock chose this LO to lift….

and created this one, using Viva Fiesta kit by WM[squared] Designs and Taste of Mexico mini by Britt-ish Designs & Sahlin Studios

Finally, Becca1976 lifted this LO…..

and came up with this one, using Sahlin Studios and Valorie Wibbons collab Make a Wish, Sahlin Studios birthday word art, and Sahlin Studios Something to Say alpha.

As you can see, there are SO many possibilities when you’re lifting a fantabulous scrapper like Britt! So get lifting!!!

A few reminders:
-You will recieve one point by posting your layout in the Grand Theft Layout gallery and then linking us up in the thread in the forum. Remember to link us up to the LO you lifted in the forum and gallery as well.
-You can receive an additional point for using new ScrapMatters products; please make a note of new products in your forum post and gallery post.
-At the end of April I will randomly choose one layout for a bonus point!
-You have until the end of April to complete your layout for your points to be counted towards April points.
-Remember no double dipping…your layout must be unique to this challenge.
-You don’t have to use Scrap Matters products, but we love it when you do!

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Hi everyone! I’m here with another Tuesday Template challenge for you! This template was really fun to put together for you all – and there are no rules for this one – just have fun with it!

And here’s what the wonderful CT ladies have done with it – as you can see, the template is very versatile and each of these ladies really made it their own!

First up is this pretty layout by Jen (jendavey) using Arabian Adventure by Britt-ish Designs and Get Real Drop Shadows by Jennifer Barrette.

Shari made this adorable 2-page layout using Bunny Foo Foo by Britt-ish Designs, Birthday Mania Collab by Designs By Tator and Keep Scrappin Designs, Slim Metal Alpha by Gwenipooh Designs and a wordart by K. Nelson

Jami (alansrock) made this PHANATICAL layout using Batter Up by Chelle’s Creations – so cool – love those photos!

Amber (jeffsamber) pulled this bright and happy layout together with Birthday Mania from Designs by Tater & Keep Scrappin’ Designs

LeeAndra made this beautiful layout – I’m not sure what she used, so please check her gallery for credits when she posts her layout!

Last but not least, Kathleen (kv2av) also used Stolen Moments Designs’ and Man in the Moon Designs’ collab Easter Morning to put together this adorable layout – love how she broke up the photo spots to accomodate more photos!

A quick reminder of the rules:
- You will receive one point for completing this challenge and posting your layout in both the gallery AND the forum thread. You will receive 1 extra point if you use a new release product within the week it was released. You must make note of this in your post in the forum to get the point.
