Home Matters 11/29

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Hey everyone!  LuAnn here with your Monday Home Matters post.

Home Matters is a newer feature on the ScrapMatters blog.  Our goal is to give you some new ideas on how to incorporate your scrapbooking talents (and digital supplies!) into your home.

I was inspired by some family tree art by Fancyprints that I found on etsy and decided to create my own family tree art using my digital kits.

Not only would these make special Christmas gifts but how about creating one to give away as a bridal shower or wedding gift?

This was very simple to make.

1.  Pick out an 11 x 14″ frame.

2.  I created my “art” for in my frame – the opening in my frame is for an 8 x 10″ photo so this is the size of my canvas.

3.  Find a tree that you like and want to use – Resize and add to the center of your canvas. The tree I used is the tree from Jady Day Studios’ Family Reunion kit.  A tree with a thicker trunk would probably work best as it allows a little more space for the “carving” on the tree that you will do.  ;)

note: You can turn any element into a silhouette by adding a layer above the element, filling that layer with black and then clipping it to the element.

4.  Choose your background paper.  I choose my background paper after picking out my tree.  The paper was created by Yari (Jady Day Studios – Thank you Yari!) esp. for my project.   If your tree is a more whimsical shaped tree, you may want your paper to also reflect that whimsy.

5.  Find a pair of birds that you like in your digital stash.  Again, Yari was kind enough to create these love birds for my project.  Change your birds into silhouettes and position them in your tree.  Or search your favorite free font site for a bird ding font.

Remember – your silhouettes do not have to be black or even solid!  Play around with different  papers until you find something that you like!  Textured or patterned papers could be really cute for your birds!

6.  Find a heart shape that you like – it can be a solid heart or a heart outline like I used (thanks Yari for the heart outline too!!!).   Position the heart on the trunk of your tree.

7.  Using a fun simple font, add the couple’s first names or the initials of their first name and the date of their wedding.  I used the 2Peas Architect font.

Here’s a close up of the “carving” on my tree – please forgive the not so good photo.   My camera and I are going to have a long talk…

8.  Don’t forget some shadows (or not – it will depend on the look you want for your art).   Save and print on presentation paper or photo paper using your printer’s best print option.  Allow to dry, cut and insert into your frame.

And there you go – a very easy yet elegant custom made gift that is sure to be cherished by the recipient!

I hope I inspired you with my Home Matters project!  Now, go forth and create!

Layout of the Week!

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Picking the Layout of the Week was very difficult this week. The gallery was full of awesome pages and it was hard to settle on just one. I finally decided that this layout needed to be recognized.

I loved the vertical line, the clean background, and the touches of pink that rocked this page. I think that jencushing did an awesome job on this layout and hope that you all will head over to her gallery or the forum to leave her some love.

Sunday Spotlight – Scrapporreia (Linda)

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Hello, hello, hello! Hope everyone here in the U.S. had a wonderful Thanksgiving and (if you dare) Black Friday as well! Today, I’m excited to bring you an interview with Linda, Scrapporreia.

1. Your screen name? Your real name?
Scrapporreia, but I walk around in public as Linda Correia

2. What is your main job/career?
I manage a team of designers (print and web), freelance copy writers and the promotion department for the media arm of a major national company as the Associate Director of Creative Services. (Gosh, that sounds so boring in writing!)

3. Are you married/children/pets?
I have one amazingly supportive, patient husband and a 4 year old son – our one and only. :)

4. Where is home for you?
I live in NJ, but I grew up in the deep South and still have a love for all things Southern – food, people, even that annoying accent that we all have.

5. What are your 3 favorite foods?
Type or regions? I’ll answer both: Regions: Southern (that was a gimme. lol), Asian (ditto to before), oh boy, now I gotta narrow? hmmm… ok, I’ll say Italian.
For Types, I’m a carnivore, I love steaks – meat Good. And I’m a carb girl, too. So, rice and pasta. They’re bland on their own, but you can do so much with them.

6. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
I don’t really like ice cream. Don’t really know why. But, once a month,  I guess Creamsicle.

7. Snacks…Salty or Sweet?
Salty,  but again once a month, I like sweet AND salty. lol

8. Beverage of choice?
Water. Water, water, water. I’m a big fan of water.

9. What’s your least favorite food?
Region: I’m gonna go with Medditerranean as a generalization, but I do love some of their stuff. Heck I really love most foods.
Type? Probably cheese. I don’t like it when places add cheese to my salad or sprinkle parmesan on my soups.

10. PC or Mac? What program do you use?
I grew up a MAC girl, and still hold a lot of loyalty to them. But I’ve come to embrace the PC. I’m on one now. I use the entire Design Creative Suites; InDesign (tho I was a Quark lover until we had to switch), Photoshop (almost when it first came out like 15 years ago) and Illustrator. I used Image Ready – but they folded that into PS the last upgrade. I also dabbled in Flash and Dreamweaver, but not in ages.

11. How long have you been digi-scrapping? How did you get started?
I think I started in June making my first layout. I started shopping in about the end of April or May. But I spent like a month just organizing the freebies and stuff I bought. Then Jenn (online, jk703, and IRL friend) pretty much smacked me and said, “make a page already!”. So I did. Now I’m obsessed.

Jenn (JK703) started me on it when she showed me this AMAZING paper album she made from her Caribbean vacation. I was so in awe. I toyed with asking her if I could pay her $100 to make me one, but then she went and got pregnant, so I figured she’d have her hands full. Then she told me that you can do it on your computer and not have to cut and paste and stitch and staple, etc. I loved the thought of that! Plus my house is the size of a school bus, so I don’t have any storage for crafts like I’d like. And the rest is out there in digiland for all to see.

12. What was your 1st LO about? My first layout was a mini-kit Challenge for another site.

13. Do you have any other hobbies besides digi-scrapping (are there other hobbies)?
lol, right? ARE there? Well, I love to read – or I did before I had a kid. I actually had a lot of different hobbies before I had a kid – like: writing, roller blading, biking, hiking, traveling, photography, cooking, baking, origami, crafts, sewing, sculpting, sketching, watercolors, interiors, ID design and the list goes on. But now, I do things like Disney on Ice, Thomas the tank engine and play with trains and cars on the floor.

14. What is the most challenging part of scrapbooking for you?
Being a newbie, I’ve found a lot of challenges in the digi-scrap world but not with the craft itself. More with the language (RAKS, ISOs, etc.) I had no idea what anyone was saying or what they meant. lol.
But in terms of scrapping, I’d have to say: ORGANIZING and downloading – mostly cuz of the organizing. Lol. On a pc when you download a file, you have to extract it, then it saves it into a folder within that folder , so I have to open the two folders, move the one into the other. Its so tedious.

15. What would you like to learn to do (or do better) not related to scrapbooking?
Oh man, there is so much. I’d like to improve my creative and promotional writing. I’d love to get a voice coach and learn to really sing – and develop the presence to perform. I would love the time and resources to go to culinary school.

16. What are your favorite movies/TV shows?
I’m a horror, crime drama fan. I love the gory shows like the SAW series, I love Criminal Minds, CSIs, NCISs, Bones, Castle, etc. But my must watch is GLEE.  Love that show.

17. Describe your “scrapping” environment. Music? TV in the background? Drinks? Snacks? Where?
I have 2: one is on the NJ Transit commuter train to and from NYC. Its an hour long so I get some uninterrupted scrapping time.
The second one is in my oversized yellow armchair with my laptop on a pillow on my lap. My husband is usually on his laptop or watching TV on the sofa next to me, we’re usually talking or  watching the DVR. Most nights he crashes and I keep on scrappin’.
And… sometimes, I bring all my stuff over to Jenn’s house and we scrap and chat. That’s always fun, even if we don’t chat too much. Our husbands don’t get it ‘cuz they think we should be talking the whole time since we want to do it together. lol

18. If you only had 2 elements to use on a LO, what would they be?
String (or ribbon) and something natural like leaves or something. But, even if I don’t use a bunch of them, I like to have the choice of a lot of elements.

19. Would you like to share a little known fact about you…?
Ha ha, I feel like I already have! But here is one more: I secretly wish I could stop working and be a stay at home mom… well, when my DS starts school … but have the same income I do from working. Lol

20. Can you tell us a little about your scrappin’ style? I think I am still trying to find my scrapping style. I prefer less photos to a bunch on a page. I like looking at clean layouts, so I like to make them as well.  I like to read people’s journaling, so I’ve been trying to journal on every layout.

21. Favorite LOs that you have done?

22. How long have you been a member at ScrapMatters?
Since I started back in July

23. Do you have any suggestions for kits you’d like to see in the SM store?
I’d love to see day camp kits, zip lines, stick ball, picnic tables, color wars, Swimming lessons, go carts, school bus, carnival, field day type stuff, costume day, bubble day, sidewalk chalk, etc. There are kits that have some of each of these things but not a kit that has a whole bunch of things related to these types of activities.

24. If you could be a superhero, which would you pick and why?
I’m a mom… what do you mean, I’m NOT already as superhero? ;)
He’s not from a comic book, but I’d love to have Peter Patrelli’s powers on Heros. He absorbs the powers of anyone around him so he gets to have all the powers. Greedy, I know, but if I’m going to get to choose, I want it all.

25. Can you describe yourself in 5 words?
Mommy, wife, friend, sister, designer.

Thanks so much Linda for letting the rest of the scrapping world get to know you a little better! Be sure to stop by and check out Linda’s gallery here at ScrapMatters.

-Jenn (jk703)

Saturday Special

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

Hi everyone!  Cara here (aka colson) I’m so excited to be hosting my first Saturday Special.  Today we’re going  “back to basics” with a tutorial on easily resizing, flipping and rotating elements, papers, photos… well, everything on your layout.

When I began digi-scrapping a year-and-a-half ago, I thought I was a Photoshop genius and realized I knew next to nothing!  It was quite some time before I discovered the Transform tool; I was resizing, flipping and rotating everything before I put in on my layout.  What a pain, right?  So for those of you who are new to the wonderful hobby of digi-scrapping, or for those of you (like me!) who don’t know about this fabulous tool, this Special is for you.

I’m starting with a template as many of us  (both new AND experienced scrappers) do.  You can see in this template (by WM[squared] – thanks, Wendy!) there are two places for photos and some smaller-scale elements.

Template File

First, I want to place my photo.  I’ve edited it and given it some photo effects, so I’m going to grab it and drag it onto my template file.

Big Photo

As you can see, the photo is ginormous!!!  Way too big for the photo box on the template.  So here’s what we do.  Personally, I like to clip my photo to the photo layer first, then make size adjustments, but you can do it either way.  The end result will be the same.  So move your photo to the layer ABOVE your template’s photo square, then right click on your photo layer and select Create Clipping Mask. Voila!

Then move your photo on the layout so you can see at least a little of it.  Now (here’s the magic!), Click Ctrl-T (or Edit ->Transform ->Scale).  Now you’ll see a box around your photo.

Ctrl-T

While HOLDING DOWN the Shift key, click and hold down the left mouse button and drag the corner of your photo towards the diagonally opposite corner, making the photo smaller.  (The Shift key is very important as it keeps your proportions constant.  If you’re not holding shift, you’ll only make that mistake once (LOL) and you can always hit Undo. )  If you didn’t quite get it right the first attempt, you can just do those same steps again to make it larger or smaller.

Right Size

That technique works on anything – photos, elements, word art – so resize to your hearts’ content. The next trick you’ll need is rotating.  For this example, I’m going to use some stitching.  When I bring in the file, it’s horizontally straight and I’d like it to be framing my photo like the template shows.  First we choose  Edit ->Transform ->Rotate

Menu

Then grab the handles that come up on the corners and spin your element until you get it where you want it.  Perfect!  Click back to the Move tool to bring up a window that asks you if you wish to Apply the Transformation.  Click Apply. Resize if necessary and position it exactly where you want it.

One last trick is flipping an element horizontally or vertically.  Sometimes the element just doesn’t fit your layout correctly the way it is made, but would be perfect if you flipped it.  How do we do it quickly?  Use your favorite Transform tool (Edit ->Transform ->Flip Horizontal) or (Edit ->Transform ->Flip Vertical) depending on how you want to flip it.  That’s it!

Feel free to experiment with the other Transform tool options too – Warp, Perspective, Skew and Distort all have their place in digital creation as well.  I hope that this tutorial has helped you with some quick and easy ways to resize, rotate and flip items on your layout.  I can’t wait to see what you create!!

Here is my finished layout with TONS of resized and edited items on it.

Adoption LO

Now for the rules:

- You have until December 15 to complete this challenge.
- Post your pages in the “Saturday Special” gallery and link it back to the thread in the forum.
- You will earn 1 point for your LO and a bonus point if you use a new release (within 7 days of release – be sure to mention this in the forum and in your credits).
- You don’t have to use ScrapMatters products, but we love it when you do!
- No double dipping, your LO must be unique to this challenge.
- At the end I will pick a random winner to receive an extra bonus point.

Kits 4 Kids includes mini-kits from Erica Zane, GG Digital Designs, Jeanine DeOre, Mye De Leon, Stolen Moments, Trixie Scraps and Wimpy Chompers. You will not be able to purchase these mini-kits separately at a later time.
