Sunday Spotlight Guest Designers- Kay Miller Designs

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

I am back with another designer interview today!  Now we get to learn all about Kay Miller of Kay Miller Designs!

1. Your screen name? Your real name? KayM

2. What is your main job/career? I am a designer, stay at home, homeschooling mother :)

3. Are you married/children/pets? I am married to the best guy in the world, Paul, and we have two great kiddos, three dogs, two cats, two rats and two horses. How’s that for a menagerie? LOL

4. Where is home for you? I live in South Central Missouri.

5. What are your 3 favorite foods? ice cream, chex mix and Fritos. I’m a real health nut. :D

6. PC or Mac? What program do you use? I loooooooooove my Mac! I have two, an iMac and a Macbook Pro. I use Photoshop CS4 and Illustrator to design and scrap.

7. What is the most challenging part of designing for you? The business part. I love to be creative. I am constantly thinking of new things to make all the time, but the business end of it all really bogs me down. I wish I had someone to do all of that part for me :)

8. What would you like to learn to do (or do better) not related to scrapbooking? Well, I would love to learn to take better pictures. I take pictures all the time and learn new things daily it seems, but I would love to learn more about lighting and how to get good photos indoor or in low lighting. Oh I guess that is kind of related to scrapbooking isn’t it??  Another one is that I would love to learn more about web design and html. When it comes to my personal store, I always have to get someone to do things for me.

9. What are your favorite movies/TV shows? I am a diehard fan of LOST. LOVE that show!! So sad it’s over :(  There’s not much on now that I just love. I enjoy kids movies, and I like action/adventure. I also love a good romantic comedy every now and then. My favorite of all times is While You Were Sleeping with Sandra Bullock. That’s an awesome movie and I watch it each year at Christmas time.

10. Describe your “designing” environment. Music? TV in the background? I don’t eat, drink, watch TV, or listen to anything while I work. Well except for maybe the kids playing and the dogs barking! LOL I like it to be peaceful and quiet. I’ve tried to l love music but I can’t design with it playing. It really distracts me. And I wouldn’t want crumbs in my keyboard. LOL

11. If you only had 2 elements in a kit, what would they be? Flowers and more flowers!! LOL! I love flowers and have a very hard time creating a page with a kit that doesn’t have any. I guess if I have to pick another element it would be some kind of ribbon. I use ribbons on almost every page I do.
12. Would you like to share a little known fact about you…? Hmmmm…. I can’t think of anything very interesting. I love to be alone and I have curly hair that I straighten all the time. Pretty boring huh??
13. When did you start designing? How did you get started? I started designing in 2004. I can’t believe it’s been that long. I had been paper scrapping for a year or two and I was doing so much of it on my computer. I would do my titles, journaling and some elements on the computer. Then I would print them, cut them out, and add them to my pages. I thought about doing my pages all on the computer, but really didn’t know how at that time. Kind of as a lark, I typed computer scrapbooking in the search at Yahoo groups and I found a group just for that! It was in the very early days and we mostly made papers and elements and just shared them. There weren’t any digi stores yet. Anyway, as soon as some of the stores started opening, I started selling my kits.

14. How would you describe your design style? My style is very whimsical and cute. I can do other styles and occasionally I’ll do a more sophisticated type kit, but I love the cute stuff :)

15. Where do you get your inspiration/motivation? Oh from lots of things. I love to look through my kids books, catalogs and even the children’s clothing. I also scan the cards at card stores to see if anything inspires me.
16. Which of your products in the Scrapmatters Store showcases your style the most? The kit I just finished with Yari, Park Play, is a perfect example of my style. Cute, whimsical and full of children and little animals.

17. What is your favorite color scheme to design with? I love pink!! LOL! Mostly I use bright pretty color combinations. I’m not a fan of boyish colors or anything masculine. I am very challenged in the male department when it comes to designing!

18. Favorite kit you’ve designed for Scrapmatters? Well, I’ve only done one so far, so I have to pick it! LOL! Park Play which is a collab with my friend Yari, Jady Day Studio.

Thanks Kay for telling us more about you!! Be sure to check out Kay’s full shop before the end of the month for more goodies!

Saturday Special 3/12 – Blending Photos

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

Hello, Melissa (yzerbear19) here with this week’s Saturday Special challenge. If you’ve seen my gallery, you’ve probably noticed that I love to blend pictures into the background of my layouts. It’s pretty easy to do. The instructions for this tutorial are for Photoshop. The techniques may be slightly different depending on your program.

For basic blending

1. Place your photo where you want it.

2. Select the blend mode you want to use. I tend to use OVERLAY and SOFT LIGHT. Play around with the different blend modes to see which one you like best.

3. Adjust the fill and opacity levels until you achieve the look you want.

Sometimes though there are parts of your blended photo you don’t want or you might want a softer edge. For this technique we are going to use the layer mask. The benefit of the layer mask is that if you make a mistake it is very simple to correct. To achieve this:

1. Select the layer you want to blend.
2. Follow the steps above for the basic blend.
3. Add a layer mask

4. Select a large soft brush.

5. Paint over the edges you want to soften.
6. If you make a mistake you can paint over the area with the white and it will restore the original picture.

Another way to soften the edges is to use the gradient tool with the layer mask.

1. Follow steps 1-3 above.
2. Once you have added the layer mask instead of using the brush select the gradient tool.

3. This technique works best with a straight gradient.

4. Add a gradient to the mask.
5. It may take a few tries to get one that you are happy with. Just undo and try again if you don’t like a particular gradient.

Here is my finished layout.  I decided to go with the linear gradient blend.

It’s in the Cards – 3/10/2011

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Hi everyone!  Its Amanda (Abhall76) here to kick of the day with my first “it’s in the cards” template.   I decided to do a template for a pocket card that I have always loved.  There are so many possibilities with this one as I am sure you will see by some of the great samples that the Creative Team have come up with!

I will start off with my sample using Pebbles and Butterflies by Haynay Designs,  Create It Yourself: Flowers v. 1 and Create It Yourself: Leaves & Stems by Krisi’s Kreations

Next we have this gorgeous birthday invitation by Melanie (scrappymelly) using Main Street Magic by Connie Prince.

And now here is lovely one by Carina (cinna) using That’s Not My Clover by Erica Zane

Karen (bydelstorp) came up with this great birthday card using Cupcakes & Candles and You Say It’s Your Birthday mega collabs by the ScrapMatters Design Team.

Here is the fantastic way Cathy (Scrappycath) came up with to let someone know you love them.  She used Orange Crush by Jennifer Labre Designs.

And here is a fantastic one that Jewelle (jubeejewels) came up with using Erica Zane’s What’s Cooking? {the whole batch}.

So now that you have seen some fantastic samples I hope the template doesn’t scare you too much.  It really is easier (and far more fun) than it looks!  I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

You can grab the template here!

.

Hello Henriette here with this months photochallenge and we will be talking about how to photograph glass.

Words and images by John Gravett of Lakeland Photographic Holidays.

Glass – we look through it, or drink out of it everyday, but rarely look upon it as a subject for photography.

The equipment you need will vary as much as the subject you’re shooting, but usually a long lens (and tripod) are good for the best results.

Glass in buildings and windows
Whether we photograph from the inside of the building through the glass, or from the outside, capturing reflections, shooting glass is often about simplifying.
Stained glass windows in churches make a great subject, but people often fall into a couple of easy mistakes. Firstly they try to get all the window, including all the surrounding stone work in, and secondly, they stand too close.

Trying to get too much in the shot typically results in too much small detail, failing to bring across the real detail within the window. The surrounding area of dark stone usually records no detail, and by effecting the meter reading also causes blown-out highlights in the window. Standing near the window and pointing the lens up to get the whole window in creates converging verticals which need too much adjustment later in PhotoShop.

I try to find the element, pattern or scene in the window that I find appealing, and by using a long lens, from as far back in the church as I can get, point the camera up as little as possible. These techniques make metering easier (although if the window has a few clear areas, you might need to use -1/3rd stop compensation to avoid losing detail in those); and will minimise converging verticals. I have used up to a 400mm lens at the far end of a church for window details. If it is important for you to keep detail in the surrounding stonework, you may find it necessary to bracket exposures and combine them using HDR software for the best results.

With stained glass, the weather makes a big difference too; a sunny day with the sun streaming in the window is about as bad as it gets – the best time for stained glass is on an overcast day, when the shadows of the protective mesh that is so often fitted outside does not show. If the sun is shining through the window, try shooting the abstract patterns of light that the sun creates.

Windows in modern office blocks can reflect the most amazing reflections and abstract patterns. Again, it’s not necessary to get the whole building in the shot, in fact, it often works well when juxtaposing two adjacent buildings of slightly different styles. Try a longish lens to help isolate detail, a 70–200mm would be ideal.

Another technique for glass could be shooting through a window on a rainy day, when the raindrops create a pattern in their own right. As an added dimension, try to get something appropriate through the window, as it can give a feeling of what you’d like to be doing if it wasn’t raining.

Glass objects
With glass as a subject, there are many ways to shoot or light it. I took a wine glass full of white wine, and simply put it on a window sill, the inverted image of some trees outside the window lifted the simple composition and made the glass more interesting. To photograph glass indoors, it always looks best lit through the glass, I stood a lightbox on its side and placed a glass sheet in front of it – I actually used an old fish tank, this allowed the glasses to be lit from below and behind all with the same light source, to bring out the shape by highlighting the edges of the glasses. A good way of really emphasising the edges is by bringing dark panels in at the sides, which reflect and emphasise the shape still further.

Glass in all its forms can clearly make for an interesting and varied subject, with no real limitations – so get out and give it a go.

Karen (Bydelstorp) used a different angle on the subject with this beautiful picture:

My try on glass, I didn’t go for the details but the whole window plus frame because I liked how the light shone through it:

Love to see your go on the challenge!

Henriëtte
