The Saturday Speical 7.30.11 – Themed Kits

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

How often do we see a kit in the store and think, WOW, this kit has the perfect colors for certain photos you have don’t they don’t match the theme of the kit at all?!?

You would be surprised at all the different ways a kit can be used just by thinking a little outside of the box.

So many of the kits have several elements that can be used in a variety of ways. Themed…yes, but useful in so many other ways. So many times I see boys kits that are perfect colors of some pics I have of my daughter, or a summer kit that matches fall pictures I have. Use the colors of the kit to work to your advantage!

Here is an example of a layout I created using these very themed kits:

see how the colors match my photos perfectly, yet they clearly do not match the theme of the kits.

So remember, when you see a kit don’t let the name or theme scare you away. If you like it, challenge yourself to make it work for your pictures. You will love the creativity it takes and will probably love the page even more when you are done.

Here are some pages from our CT, using themed kits for their photos not the theme:

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Happy Tuesday! I really love the split-paper look, so for this week’s template I decided to try doing a diagonal paper split template, I hope you like it!

This is my page using it and Oh, Happy Day by Jenn Barrette and Erica Zane.

And here are some gorgeous examples from the SM team!

Tronesia created this gorgeous page using At The Playground by Wm[squared]

Becca372 used a ScrapMatters Mega, Tropical Float, for this beauty:

kmkarayannis used For Him by Graham Like the Cracker and made it her own by adding another photo:

Trista (scrappyt) also made it her own by rotating it and adding to it, using Baa Baa Black Sheep Kit and Blog Freebie from Band Geek Designs

Layout of the Week – July 24th

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

I just adore this page by alamama! I’m drawn in by the photos and how they are stacked on top of each other. I love how she has edited them to match the colours perfectly. The simplicity of the page allows the photos and stories to shine but she also adds personality with the pops of colour. It is just stunning!

7/23 The Saturday Special – Selective Coloring

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

?

Trista here to show you a little trick to make your photos pop! It’s known as selective coloring or recoloring and can be farely simple to achieve. The challenge is to create a page using a photo that you have recolored.

Find an image that has a prominate color that you would like to emphasize. In this case I want the red hat to pop.

original.jpg

Open image in photo editing software (I am using Photoshop 7).

Duplicate the Layer by right clicking on the layer in the layers palette then selecting Duplicate Layer or from the top menu click Image then select Duplicate Layer. You can also hold down the Ctrl and J keys at the same time to duplicate the selected layer.

Make sure the top layer is selected in the layers palette then desaturate. To desaturate click on Image from the top menu, then Adjustments, and select Desaturate. Holding down the Shift, Ctrl, and U keys at the same time is a shortcut.

desaturate.jpg

For now hide the desaturated layer by clicking on the eye in the layers palette.

Grab the magic wand from the tools palette.

magicwandtool.jpg

Make sure the colored layer of the image is selected in the Layers palette.

This step will vary slightly based on each image. Click on the object you want to emphasize. You may have to hold down the shift key and click several times to select all of the object. Once there are marching ants surrounding a good deal of the object (it doesn’t have to be perfect, tweaking is next on the to do list) click on the desaturated layer in the Layers palette then click delete.

magicwand.jpg

You will notice that most of the color of the object you have selected shows through. I still want to see the color in the signage on the hat, so I grab the eraser tool from the tools palette. You will want to zoom in (hold down ctrl and + key) real close so you can see the details of the object. It may be a little grainy if you are in real close, but seeing the details is the main goal.

Make sure the desaturated layer is selected in the Layers palette. Adjust the eraser so that it will fit within your object.

erasing.jpg

Continue to erase until you are satisfied with the result.

final.jpg

Click on Layers from the top menu and then select Merge Visible to merge your photo into one layer.

You could stop here, but the image is kind of drab since it was desaturated, so I think more tweaking is in order. From the top menu click on Image, then Adjustments, then Brightness/Contrast or click on the “add adjustment layer” icon at the bottom of the Layers pallete.

adjustlayer.jpg

My final image.

editcontrast.jpg

Here is the page I created using the edited photo. I used the Wizarding Magic Collab from the ScrapMatters Design Team.

littlehero.jpg

The creative team put this tutorial to the test and created these great pages.

Michelle did a great job recoloring the bright lights from the light sabres in this photo! She used He’s A Superstar from Band Geek Designs.

2m47omh.jpg

Fiona brought to life this fun beach photo by recoloring the swim trunks. She used the brand new Peace, Love, and Flips Flops Bundle – WM[squared] and Crossbone Cuts

The Hybrid Corner 7/21/11

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Hi Everyone!  I should probably introduce myself since this is my FIRST ever post on The ScrapMatters Blog.  Well maybe I shouldn’t since I am not following the instructions for the post to a T.  I have found the ScrapMatters team to be so much fun to work with so maybe I will get away with it.  Since I am crossing my fingers that this will be  the case, My name is Tamara and I go by tsmspt in the forum at ScrapMatters.  What part of the instructions am I choosing to greatly adapt to better fit my needs?  Well, I am supposed to be giving you some kind of detailed tutorial for creating some hybrid goodness.  But I am really hoping that by giving something away all my transgressions will just be over-looked.

What inspires my Rebellion?  A picture is worth 1000 words. So here is it.

What you see here is a big stack of Make it yourself purses that I bought 3 years ago.  In my mind, I would just make them  up for all the women in my life and give them away for Birthdays and Christmas.  I have managed to make quite a few, but still I think I need to reclaim some of the closet space.  So as we visit my project, start thinking of a great Purse idea that you would make and leave a comment for a chance to give one of my Purses a “purse”pose.

I really have been stumped with ideas.  And just found my inspiration a few days ago.  One of my best friends in the whole wide world just had a Birthday (thank you FaceBook for the reminder).  She is a wonderful wife and mother for 3 great kids.  The oldest of her bunch has Autism.  She is definitely a strong advocate for her child and I love and respect her so much.  Now I am halfway through with my project-I have found a recipient.  Next I needed a fabulous kit worthy of the daily joys and struggles my great friend goes through.  I found this Gem of Elements by Amy Stoffel, which was inspired by her family life.

Pretty exciting!  The purse I have has two 8×10 top loading slots. So all I needed to do was create two 8×10 landscapes and print.

Next, I just loaded the print in the protective sleeve and added a bow.

I really hope she will love it.  If you have an idea for a purse, please leave a comment here and I will come back on 7/24/11 at 9pm MST and pick and winner.  Can’t wait to see what your “Purse”onality is!
