Saturday Special

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

If you’re like me, then you have a lot of old photos that are discolored from age. I see advertisements all the time for photo restoration services. While these experts are awesome for photos that are difficult to recover ( torn, burnt, cracked, etc) they can be a bit pricey for simple color corrections on vintage shots.

This method has worked well for me. It’s not the absolute best method out there and you may not get your photos to the exact color, but you can definitely get rid of the maroon family photo look!

This tutorial works for both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. I have tested in in PSCS5 and PSE9.

Start with your vintage photo. As you can see mine also has a bit of tearing and some writing transferred to the front of this photo from another photo. I’m going to go ahead and fix those problems. Before you correct the color you might want to fix any issues like mine.

Ahh, this is much better

Now to correct that awesome 1978 magenta!

The first thing I do is use the auto-tone and auto color options. They don’t work miracles on every photo but they do improve your chances a lot.

Next we’re going to adjust the color balance. The menu option is called Color Balance. You are going to adjust the sliders for Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. You will also have to adjust the highlights, shadows, and midtones separately. I usually start with the midtones and then adjust the highlights and shadows. Your photo may still look washed out, but your color should improve. This is going to vary depending on the color issues you have with your photo.

Finally I’m going to adjust the levels to make the overall tones of the light correct to my eye. I could continue making adjustments to the photo until I feel it’s accurate enough, or I could leave it at a level I’m satisfied with even without perfection. As long as the color tones are pleasing I’m ok with them not being completely accurate.

I’d love to see your before photos with your layouts as well. I’m excited to see what you create!

Here are some examples from the awesome creative team!

Sunday Spotlight – Debby (debbysrose)

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

Hi!  Today we are featuring one of our Scrap Matters Girls:  Debby (debbysrose).  I recently got to meet her IRL and she is an amazing person.  So, without further ado, here is debbysrose!

1. Your screen name? Your real name?
debbysrose,  Debby

2. What is your main job/career?
I have been a nurse for 36 years and currently work as a nurse manager at a large community hospital

3. Are you married/children/pets?
I have been married for 35 years,  WOOT!  I have 2 adult daughters and 2 adorable grandsons.

4. Where is home for you?
I have lived in Southern California my entire life, and have lived in just 4 homes all that time.

5. What are your 2 favorite foods?
Raspberries and sour cream

6. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
I am not huge ice cream fan, but if I do eat it, there usually is some chocolate in it

7. Snacks…Salty or Sweet?
Mostly salty, I love dips, pretzels but I also like mixing salty and sweet together too.

8. Beverage of choice?
Depends on the time of day, coffee in the morning, water during the day, I carry a water bottle around with me.  When we go out, it is almost always a margarita on rocks

9. What’s your least favorite food?
Canned tuna, blech

10. PC or Mac? What program do you use?
PC all the way,  I scrap with PSE8 and will probably make the leap to CS soon.

11. How long have you been digi-scrapping? How did you get started?
I had tried to teach myself with a DVD tutorial and books but was not successful until my daughter Kim gave me and other family members a lesson when she was visiting last summer.  My hubby hooked her laptop up to our big screen tv, we sat around the family room and she gave us a hands on lesson. She is a fantastic teacher!

12. What was your 1st LO about? (Pics and links will be needed for the blog post)
My first layout was about my step granddaughters because that was the layout I had been trying to do unsuccessfully for nearly 2 years.

13. Do you have any other hobbies besides digi-scrapping (are there other hobbies)?
I love to garden and have a veggie garden and a large rose garden. I have been sewing since I was 13, and love needlework and crochet as well.

14. What is the most challenging part of scrapbooking for you?
Working with my old scanned photos.  I try to look for tutorials on repairing damaged photos to keep learning new techniques. I am also kind of color nut and need to have colors that complement my photos. I am a pretty slow scrapper because I usually need to tinker with the photos and try out lots of papers and elements before I make up my mind.

15. What are your favorite movies/TV shows?
Favorite movies are Harry Potter by far.  I am not a big TV fan, I would rarely turn it on if it was up to me. My hubby loves TV so we watch a lot of stuff together. We like cooking and home shows so HGTV is a favorite channel. We watch a lot of crime themed shows too.

16. Describe your “scrapping” environment. Music? TV in the background? Drinks? Snacks? Where?

I sit on the couch with my laptop, I have never done a layout sitting at a desk or table! The TV is usually on so I listen more than I watch.

17. If you only had 2 elements to use on a LO, what would they be?
This is a HARD question. Flowers I guess, it is hard for me not to use flowers. I guess some kind of string or ribbon would be the other one.

18. Would you like to share a little known fact about you…?
That rose garden I talked about, I have about 500 different varieties in it and most of them are antiques or varieties hybridized before 1950.  I don’t like most modern varieties, they do not have enough fragrance. I also love the romance and history associated with antique roses.

19. Can you tell us a little about your scrappin’ style?
Well since I am still developing my style and skill, I am not sure I have just one style.  I was not a paper scrapper, so for my the only limit to how I create are the photos I have and my PSE skill.  I like pushing myself and trying new stuff.  I do love clustering and love lots of layers.

20. Favorite LOs that you have done?
I love this one, it was outside my comfort zone AND a speed scrap so I had to push myself a lot!
This one speaks for itself!

I love this one of my hubby when he was little.

and this of my Mom

Journaling does not come easily for me unless it is happy, descriptive stuff. Heartfelt, sad stuff not so much. That is why I am proud of this one

She started it all!

21.  What is your favorite part of being a member of the Scraps Matter Gang?
It is a real community, I feel like I have made real friends there, everyone is so nice!  I love that I get to hang out with Kim there, too.

22.  What is your favorite childhood memory and have you scrapped it?
The cute dresses my Mom made my sisters and I, I can remember so many of them, but we don’t have pictures of that many. I have done a couple of layouts with some of the dresses.

We had lots of cute, frilly party dresses. I always got to wear the favorites a long time because I would get my older sister’s when she grew out of it.

So that is Debby!  Please check out her gallery and leave her some love!
