Sunday Spotlight – Jaime (Simply J Studio)

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

1. Your screen name? Your real name? simply_j_studio aka ocmath; Jaime

2. What is your main job/career? I used to teach junior high math until my oldest (who is 10) was about 3.  I’ve been a stay-at-home mom ever since.

3. Are you married/children/pets? I’ve been married for 14 years… 4 kids: 10yo boy, 7yo boy, 5yo girl, 18mo boy

4. Where is home for you? Utah

5. What are your 3 favorite foods? Pasta, Soup (any kind, but I especially love homemade chicken noodle), salads from Zupa’s

6. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Peanut butter & chocolate

7. Snacks…Salty or Sweet? Sweet

8. Beverage of choice? Diet Coke or ice water

9. What’s your least favorite food? I’m not terribly picky… I like most things.  I’ll eat them, but I guess I don’t really like fast food hamburgers.

10. PC or Mac? What program do you use? PC; Photoshop and Illustrator CS4

11. How long have you been digi-scrapping? How did you get started? I started out paper-scrapping eons ago (like when I was in high school), but I’ve been digi-scrapping now for about 4 or 5 years.  I started out teaching myself on PaintShop Pro and eventually switched over to PS Elements and took some classes and now work primarily in PSCS4.

12. What was your 1st LO about? I don’t remember what first ever layout was about, but this one of my daughter was one of the first pages I posted at SM.

13. Do you have any other hobbies besides digi-scrapping (are there other hobbies)? I like photography and am trying to learn more whenever I can.  I also love to read and spend time with my kiddos and husband.

14. What is the most challenging part of scrapbooking for you? The most challenging is probably trying to stay organized.  I’ll get a good system down, but life moves so fast, it’s always hard to maintain!

15. What would you like to learn to do (or do better) not related to scrapbooking? I really want to improve on my photography.

16. What are your favorite movies/TV shows? Pride & Prejudice (the 6 hour Colin Firth version); The Closer

17. Describe your “scrapping” environment. Music? TV in the background? Drinks? Snacks? Where? I usually concentrate best without other distractions, but I do like to listen to music occasionally.  Anything chocolate with a cold drink.

18. If you only had 2 elements to use on a LO, what would they be? Hmmm… probably a simple frame and some ribbon.

19. When did you start designing? What is your favorite product that you’ve designed? I started selling hybrid templates around July 2008 (I’d been creating them for my own use for awhile before that).  I’ve since also started offering digital kits as well.  My favorite hybrid templates are my CD/DVD folders/envelopes here:

and here:

My favorite digital kit is probably “Knowing Life” here:

20. How would you describe your design style? I like to think of my style as clean and simple with a bit of whimsy.  I love to add doodles to my kits, and I love clean lines when I’m scrapping.

21. Where do you get your inspiration/motivation? Everywhere… seriously.  If I see something that inspires me in a magazine or on a package or wherever, I’ll cut it out or take a picture and add it to my inspiration notebook.

22. Which of your kits showcases you style the most? I think the Knowing Life kit above, my Celebration kit here:

and my Moments kit here:

showcase my digital style the most.

23. What is your favorite color scheme to design with? I like to design with soft, calm colors with a few neutrals added.  I rarely design with bold, bright, loud colors.

24. Favorite kit you’ve designed? Besides the hybrid templates and kit mentioned above, I’d say my favorite is Celebration:

Thanks for sharing some of your work with us and letting us get to know you better!!  Be sure to check out ALL the goodies in her ScrapMatters store!

Saturday Special 9/17/2011 Vintage Photos

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

Howdy, everyone! Chel here! Do you LOVE fall kits – but don’t really have a fall season? OR do you have a photo that would look awesome with an old timey feel? Then this tut might help you!!  I wrote these instructions for PSE so your program may be a little different. If you have any problems please send me a PM and I will help as best I can! I know it is a TON of steps but I really liked the end result! If you would like to see the screen shots head on over to the 9/17 Saturday Special Thread.

Step 1. Save a copy of the photo that you want to use….just in case!

Step 2. Open the photo and duplicate the photo layer by going to Layer/Duplicate layer. Hit OK. Change the blending mode to Hard Light.

Step 3. Duplicate the original photo layer again (so you will have 3 layers at this point) Go to filter/adjustments/invert – change the blending mode to Soft Light.

Step 4. At the bottom of the layer palette, (4 layers now) click the icon that looks like a circle that is half white & half black - this is the create new fill or adjustment layer button. Select Gradient. In the pop up box select both Reverse and Dither. Click the top portion where the color choices are select a brown and press OK. If you are not satisfied try click on the Gradient layer and try changing the angle of the color streaks. Change the Layer Blending of the Gradient layer to Hard Light. If you want more of the color to show through reduce the opacity.

Step 5 – Go to Layer/New Fill Layer/Solid Color. A box will appear. Hit OK. Then select a black color and hit OK again. (5 layers) With the black layer still selected – go to Filters/Blur/Gaussian Blur. I did my radius at 250 pixels. Change the blending mode to soft light at about 60%.

Step 6. Create a new layer (6 layers)  use Paint Bucket tool to color the layer a yellow brown. I used 996711. Now go to Filters/Filter Gallery. Select Texturizer. On the right hand side of the screen is a drop down menu. In the menu, select Texturizer. I had the scaling at 100% and the relief at 4. Press OK. Change the blending mode to Pin Light at about opacity to about 50 – 60%.

Step 7. Oh and ah over how wonderful your photo looks! Here is my before and after photo!

Here is my LO:
I used Erica Zane’s All Fall Down Kit

Here is some awesome inspiration from the CT!

Ophelia used the Purple Dreams  and  Electric Ave Templates  by True Blue Studio to create:

Trista used Genuine by Jennifer Labre & the font was Blackadder ITC to create:

Tamara used the SM Mega Collab Autumn Splendor to create:

Remember if you would like to see the screen shots head on over to the 9/17 Saturday Special Thread. Hope you have fun with this tutorial!

Happy Scrapping!!
Chel

Look What’s New at ScrapMatters.com 9/16/2011!!

Fall is in the air.

Okay, maybe not, but Pumpkin Spice Latte’s are available at a certain Seatle based coffee house near you, and all of my favorite stores have cinnamon scented everything. So even if fall isn’t quite here, it does smell like it.

I hope you are having a good week, and that you have new photos to scrap, because this week we have too many wonderful things to mention. Templates, Commercial Use, autumn kits, elegant kits, and a black and white collection that will just take your breath away.

Have a fantastic weekend!

The Hybrid Corner 2011-09-15

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Hi everyone! Time again for another hybrid corner!

This time I wanted to show you a quick and simple way to get hybrid. It´s one of those projects that are so nice to get started with. So what are we making? A little bag for your garden seeds! Don´t have any? Then you can make one for anything small like buttons, stickers or anything else you wanna store or give away more personalized. I´ve even made a template that you can use  if you´d like.

For my project I used this NEW gorgeous collab kit from the ScrapMatters Team called Unforgettable:

Either you make your own template or you´re free to use mine:

When you think it looks good it´s time to print – be sure to check your printers settings for best result. Here´s mine printed:

Next you cut it out and make sure to score were all the folding is. Ink all the edges using chalk or an ink pad:

Next thing is just to fold in the flaps for the side and the bottom and glue them to the back. Now you got yourself a little bag!!! I´m filling mine with marigold seeds which are one of my favourite flowers.

Talk about preserving memories of summer 2011!

I hope you´ve enjoyed this round of the hybrid corner and just go for it!

Cheers! / Carina (Hybrid CT for ScrapMatters)
