Getting Hybrid 10-06-11

Thursday, October 6th, 2011
Welcome to October’s Getting Hybrid Challenge. In last week’s Hybrid Corner, I talked about how fall seems to be the kick-off to the holiday season and did a tutorial on party decorations. Today, I’m going to round off our party decorations with party favors and offer up a challenge for you.

My favorite part of any party is the party favors. I love give unique reminders of our evening of fun. Thankfully, the store at ScrapMatters is chalk full of templates for inspiration - Hexagonal Box Template – Simply J StudioPillow Box Template – Simple J Studio Boxed Favor: v1 – Krisi’s Kreations and Favor Box Template – Simply J Studio .

Due to some technical difficulties, I am without a sample for you today.  Thanks to my fellow CT members, I have some fantastic examples.

Tamara used some great contributions to the October Mix a Kit.

Thanks for tuning in. Please join me in the forum and the gallery and show me your party decorations.

Sunday Spotlight – SMG Carol (Iowan)

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Hi, all!  I love these weekly interviews because we get a chance to get to know our friends in digi-land a little bit better.  This week I had the privilege of interviewing SMG Carol (Iowan) for our weekly interview.

1. Your screen name? Your real name? Iowan, Carol J

2. What is your main job/career? I’m a retired teacher from Iowa. I taught special education for 28 years at The University of Iowa and the Newton Community Schools, Newton, Iowa.

3. Are you married/children/pets? I have a wonderful husband and two delightful daughters. Added to this, I have the two sweetest (and most photogenic) grandchildren on earth.

4. Where is home for you? Although I grew up in Nebraska, I consider Iowa my home. I now live in Washington … so my outer Hawkeye, inner Husker, and inner Husky are at odds (and opposite ends of the field this year).

5. What are your 3 favorite foods? Crème brûlée, Annaclair Chocolates, and Baklava.

6. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Coconut.

7. Snacks…Salty or Sweet ? Hands down, nothing beats the orange fingers and worthless calories of Cheetos. Of course, being digital, the only orange fingerprints are on my keyboard.

8. Beverage of choice? I live in Seattle, duh Coffee!!

9. What’s your least favorite food? Lima beans, because, seriously, who likes them?

10. PC or Mac? What program do you use? I am a Mac lover but own a couple PCs. I could not afford to buy programs for two operating systems and my husband uses the PC at work. Hiss, hiss, boo, boo.

11. How long have you been digi-scrapping? How did you get started? My first digi scrapping was for a book I made about my great grandmother about 3 years ago.

12. What was your 1st LO about?  My first layout was for my grandmother’s book. (I think!!)

13. Do you have any other hobbies besides digi-scrapping (are there other hobbies)? I have done so many crafts it is hard to list them all; some I did well, some not so well. I used to have a business called the Cellar Seller, where I made all kinds of country crafts including woodworking items, handmade dolls, tole paintings, embroidery, quilts, and many paper crafts. Perhaps my biggest hobby besides cooking and reading is traveling. My husband and I have traveled to most of the US states and several foreign countries.

14. What is the most challenging part of scrapbooking for you? Finishing projects. This year I decided to adopt the word “complete”. I feel my life is so complete in many ways, but I really needed to complete my many quarter/third/half-done projects.

15. What would you like to learn to do (or do better) not related to scrapbooking? My photography could improve tremendously. Right now, my family tolerates the fact that I will take hundreds (and on vacation thousands) of pictures hoping to get some great ones. I have taken classes and can improve my photos with Photoshop, but I would like to get my camera off automatic more often. It would be great to get quality photos from the onset and not have to do so much editing.

16. What are your favorite movies/TV shows? My favorite movies are Fried Green Tomatoes, The Last of the Mohicans, and Princess Bride. I really like anything on the DVR (usually NCIS) on TV.

17. Describe your “scrapping” environment. Music? TV in the background? Drinks? Snacks? Where? I have a wonderful office at the front of our house where my computer faces the street. It is quite warm and comfy. There is always a cup of coffee sitting nearby. No Music-see answer #19.

18. If you only had 2 elements to use on a LO, what would they be? Definitely good frames and flowers.

19. Would you like to share a little known fact about you...? I’m nearly deaf. The digital world really makes it easier for people with disabilities to connect.

20. Can you tell us a little about your scrappin’ style? Lots of clusters and a certain amount of grunginess.

21. Favorite LOs that you have done?

22. What is your favorite part of being a member of the Scraps Matter Gang?

Aside from having support on demand? The warm caring people who make this such a terrific site. I think the positive feedback that is given to scrappers is so essential. It really gives a warm feeling when people get such thoughtful dialogue about their layouts.

Thanks so much, Carol, for sharing a little bit about yourself!

Saturday Special: 10.1.11 – Take a template for a spin

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Hello everyone,

It’s Kayla aka keepscrappin here today with the first Saturday Special of October.  I’m an admitted template junkie – just take a look at my hard drive.  There’s a whole section of just templates.   And even more that I want in the Template section of the ScrapMatters Store.  Although I love using templates, I don’t want every layout to look the same, so my solution is to use the same templates in new ways to get more looks from them.

My favorite and easiest way to get a new look is to take my templates for a spin.  Spin them left or right, flip them vertical or horizontal.  The idea is to spin them to get another look.

One of the things I love about spinning templates is that I can use a template that was originally made for portrait photos for landscape photos simply by spinning the template 90 degrees.

Here’s what I mean.  Let’s take the Simply Stated v.1 Template set by geniaBeana scraps for a spin.

I use PSE 7, but you should be able to spin or flip your templates with most photo editing programs.

First open your desired template and make a copy of it and close the original so you don’t MESS it up!  lol

Then you will work with the copy of your template.  Spinning a template is really easy just go to the menu bar and select Image | rotate | and then from the top section of that popout menu select which way you want to spin or flip it as shown in this image.

As you will notice from the screen shot the items above the line affect the whole image.  The items below the line in the middle section affect only the selected layers in your layers pallet.

Here are some variations on the template named gb_simplystatedv1_2

Here’s my layout.

I spun a template 90 degrees left from Be Inspired – Kim R. – Templates set by WM [Squared] Designs

And here’s some awesome inspiration from the SM Creative Team

Jan (QuiltyMom) Used the NEW today – October Mix-a-Kit components from True Blue Studio Spooky Templates; Template #2.  Spooky Templates and MAK items from Dream Big Designs: Haunted House Elements, Haunted House Papers, Haunted House Graffiti and Haunted House Alpha.

Wendy (Neverland Scraps) flipped WM[squared] Designs Fun and Funky v.1 and Jady Day Studios & Kay Miller’s A Girl’s Life kit

Opehlia (navaja) Flipped a template horizontally from True Blue Studio’s Autumn Bliss templates,
and used Jady Day Studio’s In for the Ride and Band Geek Designs’ Flag Tags.

Heidi (scrappurple) Flipped a WM[squared] temp Be Inspired Mel v.2

Tamara (tsmspt) Horizontally flipped the first template in this big pack Queen-of-scrap-2010-template-bundle

and used Dude a ScrapMatters Design Team Collab to make this awesome layout

Liz (mommy22girls)  Flipped one of these:

and used Jady Day Studio and Meghan Mullens’ Explore Exhibits kit to get this cool layout.

**** The challenge for today is to SPIN or FLIP a template for your layout.
And for fun tell us if you spun, flipped, or did both to your template to make your layout and if you used a NEW RELEASE for the extra point.

psssst – Don’t worry, we won’t tell your hubby, that now that you know how to spin templates you have 4 times as many templates at your disposal.  So keep collecting those templates and take em for a spin. lol

Challenge reminders:
-You will receive one point for posting in this thread & in the Saturday Special gallery. You can receive an additional point for using new Scrap Matters products; please make a note of new products in your post to get the extra point. And at the end of the month you’ll be entered into a random drawing that could earn you some bonus points!

-You have until the end of October 2011 to complete this challenge to earn MOS points.

-Remember no double dipping…your layout must be unique to this challenge.

-You don’t have to use Scrap Matters products, but remember your SM gallery must contain at least 50% SM product beginning July 8, 2011.
