The No pictures, Just Journaling!

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Hello all!  Wendy here for another installment of “Words For Wednesday”!

Ever attend an event and forgot your camera?  Ever go through something significant and need to get it down on paper, but don’t have any “pictures” to accompany that journaling?  Well….for today’s challenge, its ok!  I am guilty of putting together a LO and not attach much journaling to it.  On traditional pages, its easy to hide journaling or a long story, and with digi, I feel like my hands are tied, even though I know they aren’t.

For today, your challenge is this:  Whip up a LO with journaling only.  No pictures.  You may use all the elements you want, just no pictures! :D

To help {bribe} I mean, motivate you – everyone who posts your LO here in the forum –> here will get a participation prize!  You have until Tuesday, September 23rd to submit your LO’s.

What’s the prize you ask?  THIS:

Can’t wait to see your layouts!

Whats In A Name?

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Hello All!  Can you believe that it’s already September?  WOW!!  At any rate, Wendy here, bringing you September’s first installment of “Words for Wednesday”.

I’ve been wanting to do this “challenge” for a while now, so I’m super excited I get the chance now!  It’s all about you and your name!  How did you get your name? What’s the story behind how your parents named you.  What does it mean?  Is it significant as far as your family is concerned (i.e. is it your Great Grandmas name?).  Your challenge, should you choose to accept it is this:  Create a LO about yourself and your name!  You must have at least one picture of yourself *you can have others in the picture as well*, and include some journaling regarding your name!

Simple enough, right?  :D   If you accept this challenge, and post it in the forum –> HERE, then you will receive a participation gift!

The participation gift is this Mini Kit!  I LOVE fall colors – hence the Kit Name – “Fall In Love”! :D

Can’t wait to see your LO’s!! :D   Please be sure to post your LO in the forum so I know to PM you your participation gift! :D   You have until Tuesday, September 9th to submit your LO in the forum!

Words for Wednesday

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Hi everyone! Ellie here again with Words for Wednesday! I struggle so much with the journaling on my layouts, so recently I decided to take up a different kind of scrapping project, one where I would still need to be creative, just not so much in the things that I write! I’m working on scrapping myself a couple of cookbooks! It’s the perfect project for me because I get to combine my love of food with my love of scrapping, and the recipes are already set, so I don’t have to think too hard about what to write! lol

I wish I had some photos to post, but I’m still collecting and testing (and tasting!) recipes right now. I am taking photos of my finished dishes as I go and when I’m finished will scrap them alongside the recipes and have them printed in a photobook. Fun, right?

So as I was planning my cookbook I thought it might be cute to have little quotes scattered here and there throughout. And of course I want to share some of them with you! They can be used for all kinds of layouts, too, not just cookbooks or the food related sort! I hope you enjoy using them.

Thanks for stopping by, and happy scrapping!

Journaling As An Embellishment

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Hi all, it’s Monica here today with your Words for Wednesday. I wish that I could say that I have some great words of wisdom for you guys today, but that’s not true. To be honest, I forgot I was doing this post until it popped up on my calendar yesterday. So after some deep thought I decided to focus on layout journaling, once again.

For the most part when you look through the different galleries you see very minimal journaling. There’s the title, date, and maybe some names as well. Some layouts will go into great detail with some additional word art and maybe even a short paragraph. Then there is the digi journal. In the digi journal the journaling is the main focus. I’m a huge fan of the digi journal, but that’s not what I wanted to discuss today.

Let’s say there’s a lot you want to say in a single layout and a few words just isn’t enough. The easy solution here is to allow your journaling to be your most important embellishment. By no means does it have to be your only embellishment.

To help me get my point across i took a little tour through our wonderful ScrapMatters Gallery. Here are a few layouts that put a little more focus on the journaling.

Sahlink made it very easy for me. She had quite a few layouts in her gallery that focused on the journaling. Amazing work.

To end my post today I want to offer you all a little gift.  I completed a template in which I embellished with journaling. One simple template can often have many interpretations. This template is for your personal use. I’m offering no challenge with it, but do encourage you to practice your journaling. The possibilities are endless. I’ve also added a bonus acryllic alpha set.

This template will be available for one week only. Included in the download file is 1 PSD layered template, which shadows included in their own separate layer, and the individual png files for non PSD scrappers. Enjoy!

What’s in a title?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I don’t know about you guys, but I have the hardest time titling my pages (and even my kits now!). I can sit four hours fiddling with different titles, fonts and alphas or anything to put on my page. There have even been a few times that I just gave up and didn’t title a page (bad Daysh!). I even get lazy now and just call my sister up and make her come up with titles for me. So today (a little late….) I just wanted to talk to you a little bit about titling your pages and ideas for coming up with title ideas.

My first suggestion is to look at the theme of your page. Are there any individual words that come to mind? Any adjectives that seem to be perfect. There is this site that has a HUGE list of adjectives that are perfect for titles: http://www.esldesk.com/vocabulary/adjectives.htm They are even alphabetized to help you search through them if you are looking for a particular word that starts with an ‘a’ for example.
For example there is this page. We were at the wild animal park and the word “wild” just seemed very fitting.

or this one:

My next suggestion to you would be to do as Lina suggested in her last Words for Wednesday Challenge- find a song title or lyrics to a song that would work. Music is so powerful and so are the words (usually… ;)

These lyrics ended up being so perfect for this page, and I was so excited how well they fit and how little efford I had to put into finding a title. ;)

My last suggestion is to find a quote. This site www.thinkexist.com is the perfect place to find TONZ of quotes- any theme you could be looking for. You just type in a search word and it brings up loads of different quotes from different people! It’s so wonderful.

Hopefully this has helped a little bit and will help you as you all try to title your pages.

Template Tuesday Challenge Time!

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Hey there! Rhonda here to present all you lovelies with this week’s Tuesday Template Challenge. Ok, here it goes! I LOVE to use templates and always seem to be drawn to the ones that are sweetly simple. So, for this week, I would like to see you use only two of the photo squares(I don’t care which two) and fill the other two squares with a coordinating paper or maybe a neat little frame with some cute embellishments inside of it. But I would like to see at least six embellishments throughout your layout as well. I’m such a mean ‘ol thing! LOL! I can’t wait to see what you all come up with! And don’t forget to make the template your own!

Download the template HERE!

Words for Wednesday!

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Hi Everyone!

Denise here with my first blog post…and I am so excited to talk about words.

I love scrapbooking, not only for the opportunity that we have to capture our lives in photos, but also in words.

For me, a page isn’t complete unless I have written about how I feel about the subject, or what I thought about the moment, or given some other commentary…because somewhere down the road, when I look back, I not only want to remember what I was thinking at the time, I also want it to be a legacy for my children and for their children too.

So, today I want to give you challenge. I want you to scrap about words. I want you to write about something funny that someone you love said. But, not only about what they said, but the funny, cute, or endearing way that they said it.

For example, I love that my oldest daughter called hamburgers, hang-a-burgs, or that one of my little ones calls yogurt, o-gurt, or that my sweet Korean grandmother can’t say an American cliche properly, no matter how hard she tries. I find it so sweet that she will tell you that she “is broken” when she means to say that she is broke.

Here is a layout with the Sunset Garden Kit by DigiKeepsakes about they way that my three-year-old daughter says the alphabet. I love it! And I want to remember it just this way!

So, let’s write it down.

I’ve started a thread here in the forum for you to share your layouts. Everyone who participates will receive this AWESOME alpha by our very own Brittney of Britt-ish Designs as a participation prize.

Remember, after you post in the gallery, post in the forum so that I know you’re playing along. Everyone who posts before next Wednesday will recieve the alpha! After that, it will be only be available for purchase through the store.

I am looking forward to seeing what you have to say!

Hugs,

Denise

Traveling Through Life Freebie–Words for Wednesday

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Hi everyone–Andrea here. Well today is my birthday and since I always have my birthday so close to Independence Day here in the USA I had planned on sharing some word art for Independence Day as my birthday gift to you. But as I started going through my quote collection getting ready to work on it, I found myself more in tune with my travel and life quotes. Don’t ask me why! And travel and life both work for pretty much anywhere and anytime. So I chose quotes for the word art that describe traveling through life. So I hope you enjoy this. I’ve got some other goodies up my sleeve for later on in the day! It’s my birthday and I can celebrate how I want correct?

Here’s a preview of the word art–all phrases come in both black and white for easy recoloring. Link epired. Edited: I fixed the link–thanks to everyone so willing to help others out by posting the correct link! You’re great!

Words for Wednesday

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Hello everyone, it’s Sya here, with another post for Words for Wednesday. Hopefully it will be as inspiring to you as it is to me while I was getting ready to write it up.

Anyway, if you are like me, you would find it very hard to come up with titles for your pages. Sometimes, it was so bad that I had to take a break from creating layouts. After all, how many layouts do I have to do to say that my niece and nephew are so uber cute, that I love them so much and I would treasure them for always? That was when I couldn’t help realizing that every pages of mine seem so similar in terms of the titlework and it was really bugging me.

I really thought hard about this and here’s my Top 5 list of things to get inspired by to give your page that little bit of oomph and edge it needed.

1. Books
I am totally a booklover. Whenever I’m not scrapping, I would reach out for some kind of book to read. It’s a nice hobby where I just get to curl up and immerse myself in somebody’s invented world. You can go to the nearest bookstore and browse for titles or just go to any online bookstores.

Here are some title inspiration:
- A Charmed Place: perfect for scrapping those favourite places.
- Laws of Attraction: what attracted you to your other half?
- As I Was Passing: what lessons had you learnt in life… so far?

2. Music
Songs are great inspiration in my life. I listen to songs all the time and I just couldn’t live without it.
Go through your playlist or look up the current music chart and look at the song titles. Granted some of the songs have nothing to do with what you have in mind for the LOs, but take a closer look and you might have a winner in your hand.

Here are some title inspiration:
- Stop & Stare: perfect for those LOs that shows your child being relaxed and staring at something
- With You: declare your love for your other half.
- Here I Stand: perfect for voicing your opinion or your milestones.

3. Quotes
There are countless times when I was stuck with ideas for titles, I would turn to my collection of quotes, collected from all over the web.

Here are some of my favourite quotes:
- “The most precious love occurs without choice, and when you least expect it.” ~Author Unknown
- “Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war, love is a growing up.” ~Author Unknown
- A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be. ~Douglas Pagels
- We know we’re getting old when the only thing we want for our birthday is not to be reminded of it. ~Author Unknown

4. TV Shows
Can you imagine a wordplay on Desperate Housewives and turn it into Desperate Scrapwives instead? I remembered seeing a layout using that title and literally laughed out loud.

Here are some other inspirations:
- Crime Scene Investigation: perfect for when your child had done something wrong. It can be used to show a series of events.
- Survivor: used to show how you have survived life’s many obstacles.
- American Idol: change American to something else and the title is perfect for singing-related LOs.

5. Movies
Next time you go out for movies and rent out DVDs, browse the titles and get inspired by them. Don’t spend the watching time itching to get to the the computer though.

Here are some inspirations:
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Change the word ‘Caribbean’ to the place where you’re living and team it up with pirate photos.
- The Chronicles of Narnia: Change the word Narnia to your child’s name or your family name. Perfect for multi-photo LOs where you used photos from various events that happened in your life.
- Sweet Home Alabama: Once again, change the word Alabama to the name of your hometown.

Well, what do you think? Are you inspired? Like I said, these are just SOME inspirations. There are lots more out there.

That’s all from me. Until then, happy scrapping and don’t forget to be creative!

Scrap outside your comfort zone!

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Hello ladies! Wendy here! It’s my first time writing for the SM blog, and couldn’t for the life of me think of something to write, then it came to me.

As artists, we do an amazing job of preserving all our happy memories. Looking through my scrapbooks, you’ll see vacations, birthdays, layouts of my Godson, nephews, nieces, weddings, concerts and every other happy memory that i’ve been able to immortalize in pictures. However, as we all know, life isn’t always as peachy as our LO’s might suggest. Now, this isn’t meant to be a debbie downer post, its just a post to challenge you to scrap outside the box, scrap a not so happy memory in your life. Maybe it was losing a family member, not getting that dream job that you applied for, or anything else that you’ve made it through and as a result has made you a stronger person! Think of it as a way of healing, an outlet for your thoughts.

On June 16th of last year, my favorite grammy died. June 16th also happens to be my birthday! Talk about a bitter-sweet day! Ever since that day, I’ve wanted to dedicate a LO to her memory. Is it a happy, bubbly fun event? No, but it’s my way of saying I love you to her. It’s my way of scraping about one of my all time favorite people, and how I felt on that day when I heard the news. We used to sign everything “Love you mucho mucho”…so I incorporated that in my LO. My LO is below. Credits can be found in my gallery.

So I challenge you to create a layout to remember a particularly hard time in your life, after all, you’ve made it through. If you’re going through a rough patch right this very moment, think of it as a step towards healing, or an outlet for your thoughts.

I’ve created 2 pieces of “word art” that may help with this project. The drop-shadows in the preview are not on the actual word art itself!

You can D/L the word art –> here!

I hope this post sparks you to scrap outside the box!
