Hybrid Thursday – Project reNEWit

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Hi, everyone!  I’m excited to bring you another Project reNEWit challenge!  Anytime I come across something about to go in the trash that I think can be reused in a project, I save it.  My favorite thing to save?  Chipboard.  I love the dimension it adds to projects, and it’s amazing how much chipboard I come across everyday . . . from the back of used-up notepads, shipping packaging (especially in picture or scrapbook print orders), even cereal boxes provide a nice thin piece of chipboard.  Here are some of my recent saves:

The red one was part of the packaging in some IKEA DVD boxes I bought, and I think the brown one is part of a sheet that came in a scrapbook page order I received (used to keep the prints from bending).

I decided to make some hybrid cards with chipboard accents.  Here is what I came up with using Andilynn’s fabulous Night Music kit:

The card with the file folder also doubles as a gift card holder.  To make the buttons, I just punched circles out of the chipboard, covered, and punched 1/8″ holes.

Here’s another great project using recycled chipboard from Kari (karistamps):

Kari used a chipboard drink holder from Sonic to create this amazing gift!  I don’t think I would have ever thought to save a drink holder, but I will now!

Kim (tgmousechick) made this super cute card:

The tag is made from recycled chipboard and then covered.

So, for the May reNEWit challenge, we will be creating hybrid projects using recycled chipboard.  You can make any type of project you want (mini album, card, etc.), it just has to be hybrid and use recycled chipboard.  If you don’t like the natural look of the chipboard, feel free to print out some fun paper and cover it.

Just a little reminder: As part of the Matter of Scrap challenge system, you will receive one point for each completed, photographed project. Remember, you must post in both the subforum and in the gallery to receive credit. A random winner will be selected to receive an additional point just for participating.

I can’t wait to see your projects in the gallery and forum!

New monthly hybrid challenge – Project reNEWit

Photobucket

Hi everyone, Heather (hedderlee) here to announce our very first Project reNEWit monthly challenge! You may be familiar with Project reNEWit from previous blog posts. It is such a neat concept that we decided to expand its reach here at ScrapMatters. The items in your home that would otherwise be dumped into the recycling bin or – gasp – shoved into the garbage can get a second life as art through your participation in this challenge. Fellow ScrapMatters member Donna Sangwin, our resident recycling expert and director of reCREATE, and the hybrid team will be offering fresh takes on enviro-crafting.

My home produces a substantial amount of scrap paper because of my daughter Amanda’s homeschooling. But rather than forcing my kids and husband to use the other side of the scrap paper, which they refuse to do, I created some notepads with them using Simply Sweet Designs’ Celebrate With Me kit:

The tutorial to create notepads is included in the March ScrapMatters newsletter – be on the look out for it!

And some matchbook notepads:

You can find the template for the notepads in the shop.

This made me realize that there are so many creative possibilities to use these scraps. So for the March challenge, we will be creating projects with scrap paper that have gone through your home or work printer. Please be aware that this does not refer to junk mail or newspaper; these materials will be handled in future challenges. We’re looking for your scrap paper projects, folks.

Take a look at hybrid team member Jaime’s (ocmath) take on this month’s scrap paper challenge!

Here she created a notebook using scrap paper folded in half and cardboard from a recent photo order.

And Jaime’s versions of the matchbook notepads have little activities printed on them. How clever!

Just a little reminder: As part of the Matter of Scrap challenge system, you will receive one point for each completed, photographed project. Remember, you must post in both the subforum and in the gallery to receive credit. A random winner will be selected to receive an additional point just for participating.

Can’t wait to see your goodies in the gallery and forum!

Throw away that cereal box? No WAY! Freestyle album & freebie

Project reNEWit
Happy Thursday, dear SM friends! I have been wondering if I am the only person that cannot keep New Year’s resolutions. It’s a sad story, really – my Project 365? Now my Project 52. And it’s not looking good, folks… it might turn into Project 12.

Well, I want to show you one commitment we can easily keep. Take your nearly empty cereal boxes lurking in the deep recesses of your pantry – I have a gazillion of these leave my house. Now imagine them converted into a work of art! I cut some boxes up and came up with this:

I created this freestyle album to remind myself of what I would like to cultivate in myself: growth in faith, in gratitude, and in joy. And since I have a hard time with the pressure of New Year’s resolutions, I will keep this album on my work desk as a gentle, visual reminder of these aspirations.

Our friend, fellow scrapper and resident recycling expert, reCREATE director Donna Sangwin, shares this interesting information on cardboard:

Donna and DD

Hi All …Donna from reCREATE here. Did you know that when the economy goes down, so do the prices for recyclables, like paper and cardboard? Depending on where you live it is likely that perfectly recyclable cardboard is going into the landfill, instead of getting recycled. Tons and tons and tons of it. China used to be a major purchaser of cardboard for recycling, but as the economy softened, our demand for the products coming overseas in those recycled boxes dropped, thus the drop in demand for recycling.

Here in California where I live, they are diverting enough to fulfill the 50% diversion law (½ of our garbage by weight must be diverted for recycling), but the rest is going into the landfill. So if ever there was a time to let the kids use the boxes to play in, and for you to make them into cute albums, now is the time!

Want a guilt free trip to the grocery store? Buy in bulk…reuse your bags or use fabric bags. Look for more produce and whole foods so you won’t have to think about the cardboard!
…..

Wow, all the more reason to reuse those cereal boxes!

If you would like to make a similar album, I am providing you the template:
